Fortunately, I still prefer the one I bought a few months ago.

Do we doubt that most will choose their own, even if they now feel obligated to have it wrapped in purple?

The changes are mostly evolutionary, which is good. I am not in the market for a new car, since I love my M235 and it has just shy of 50K miles on it after 6 years. But, if I were to have to replace it, the new M240 looks like being my first choice.

Funny thing I see is the longer hood. Seems to me this is an attempt to have a coupe version of the G29.

The new M240 and upcoming M2 are the only BMWs I'd consider at this point and may be the last somewhat "true" BMW before they go electric. I will definitely consider it once I they're out and my 2016 M235 is due for replacement.
I generally like the looks of the new 2 series for the most part and I bet it will look better in person. I'm sad about the lack of the manual in the M240 so I'll likely hold out for the M2 as it will have a manual option. By then, the S58 and the new 2 series chassis will have been on the market for a few year, lessening reliability risk. With that said, I still love my M235 and still am eyeballing 2017-2018 M2s as well.

Good timing for the release and this question. I ordered an F22 that is still in transit. If the new 2 came with a 6MT I would be conflicted but it does not and that's a deal killer for me. I do however wish the F22 had the adaptive M differential and extra hp of the new model.
I don't care for the nose on the G42. It's not hideous like those on the M3/M4 but it's still not great. Overall the G42 looks ok, and the proportions while larger are still small enough to be entertaining. I prefer a bit more low key but the F22 is probably a little too low key. On balance I think the F22 is slightly better looking. A plus on the G42 is it doesn't have the one visual distortion that the F22 does, where when you look at it from the side, the rear wheels look smaller than the fronts. Overall, I'm happy I ordered the F22. Really mostly comes down to the 6MT. I also opted specifically for the M240 as I didn't want the harsher ride of the OG M2, M2C or M2CS. It's disappointing that when the last F23 comes off the line (F22 already ended), 6MT will only be available in full M Specs. Those of us who want comfort and fun will need to look elsewhere. |

I'm not a fan of the front or rear of the new M240i. The front to me doesn't look as aggressive, more ordinary almost like a blend of the F2X and E89 but in a bad way. The rear looks weird, flat and too tall.
It's also very disappointing that the M240i only comes in x-drive with the extra weight, driving dynamics, the extra cost and likely reliability complications. The "ultimate driving machine" doesn't come with all wheel drive. |

I got to drive the new M3 (6spd) - and while it is not 'pretty' it is a great drive. If the next gen M2 has that in its DNA, then the choice between a next gen M2CS or GT4 will be tough.

I still prefer the one I created for myself from an F22 M240i.

Be gone, demon!
I still prefer the "old" 2-er. I guess the new one has yet to grow on me. Shame I'll never get to see one where I live. 2-series coupes are extremely rare, especially the M235i/M240is.

There are more things I like than dislike about the new model and the interior is the highest point.
The fenders are too bloaty and I am not a big fan they made the decision to give us a M2 look on the 240. This will not be a deal breaker when time will come to replace the actual one in about 5 years. At that time, the LCI will be on the market as well as the RWD and there will be some improvements over this new design. I don't see any "practical" small sport coupe that compete in this segment. I don't foresee any will either come.

Let's face it. Most of us vote with our wallets. Our favorite 2 series is likely the one that we own. I'm guessing that unless BMW engineers and/or execs are stalking this forum no one here has driven the G42 and thus no one has a true basis for comparison. Of course it's legitimate to say that you prefer the styling of one or another model even without having driven it.
I have a 6 year old m235 with relatively low miles (42k). I have no urgent need or desire to upgrade, but I'm not offended by the g42 styling. I can't say that I like it better or worse than the f22. I'm neutral on it. It's car that I could see myself owning, but unless some unpredictable calamity happens to my m235, I most certainly won't be getting a 2022 g42. I don't want AWD, and I'm not crazy about the color choices. I'm curious to see what they'll do with the g87, and as pointed out in another thread, an optioned out m240 might be flirting with m2 pricing anyway, so why not go all in? I'm also intrigued by the idea of BMW Individual eventually coming to the g42. And this one is absolute pie-in-the-sky fantasy, but I have this dream of doing Euro Delivery again like I did with my m235. I know it's crazy unrealistic on multiple levels, but there have been rumors of (1) ED coming back in some form; and (2) dual production of the g87 in both San Luis Potosi and one of the Germany plants. Stars would really have to align for both of those things to happen, I know, but I can dream... |

Dual production of such a small-market model is highly unlikely.
BMW's general practice is to restrict production to one plant, even for high-volume models, though a few, such as the X3, are now produced in China in addition to the home plant, because of both high local demand and government 'policy', aka coercion. |
