Who 'challenges' you on the line?

Quick question as we go into the 4th of July weekend.

When you are first in line at a red light, who challenges you to a race?
for me it is always some jacked-up pick-up truck or Bronco. Other sports cars don't rev their engines, hot hatches don't try and fly off the line when the light turns green. But you put some redneck next to me and he's (almost always a male) annoying me with reving his truck's engine, and flying off the line. half the time I got my wife with me and the kids in the back seat...

I have 'flown in formation' with a couple of Z-cars, and a pretty little M235i, but those were less races, and more keeping each other company at speed .

and I'm not offering to race, unless rocking out to Journey is the new international signal for, 'let's street race.'

Thanks for showing us all your age.

I don't do that much anymore, but I have had Dodge Challenger Super B's and vette C7's want to try.

A few years back, I did take a porsche 911 carrera 4S off the line and in the quarter in my 350ZX

Agree 100%....most of the time is the big pickups. Also get a lot of challenger/charger big shots. Weirdly I don't get much dick measuring from Porsche's which are pretty prevalent around here.

I have to go with Sportstick on this one, along with a shout-out to TAZ007.

As for "When you are first in line at a red light, who challenges you to a race?"...I am shocked, simply shocked, that in America's Finest City you have to put up with that sort of behavior. Is there no one around to get these miscreants straightened-out?

Out here in flyover country, when the light turns green, everyone just...sits there. I have never once had another driver, in any vehicle, challenge my right to accelerate ahead of him or her. Even at the age of 72, I'm still the guy who takes advantage of this situation.

I'm also glad that I'm no longer living in the Bay Area or the Boston Region; because, honestly, I'm no longer willing to go balls-out (sorry, ladies) in the Traffic Grand Prix. I also know that if I was still living in those environments I would jump into the Grand Prix more than makes any sense for me today. Translation: old habits die hard.

I had a guy in a Lamborghini 'challenge' my M2 a few months ago - revving and generally being an idiot.

I'd love to say I took him but no. He creamed my ass.

I had a Kia Stinger GT rev next to me at a light on Woodward a few weeks ago.

I toggled up to Sport+, waited for the light to turn green, and then gapped his ass.

Most every Focus ST and RS, Golf GTI and R, and Mustang GT and Ecoboost seem to want to show me what their cars can do. I've never owned another car that brought so much attention.

Its why I love these cars.

The "Baby M" can't be THAT fast....

Yes. Yes it can. Like buh bye fast.

Not that I ever really have any reason to stoplight drag (but i do...why?). There are plenty of nice M's and AMG's around here, but for the most part it is always a dude in a "sporty SUV" who likes to get up on me. And those things are fast in a stright line! But sorry. Its still an SUV. So its like an automatic loss. Cuz your in a SUV....

You know, it was only one time for me, and surprise-surprise, it was a clapped-out lifted beater truck with the mandatory truck nuts hanging underneath the tow hitch. I didn't even race him: I mean, I've got an N20 and if pushed really hard it might blow up.

Interesting thread...

Here in CT, most are still driving like their hair is on fire at highway speeds, so it is no surprise that people want to challenge you at a light, even in the best city in the USA (I admit, I was flabbergasted by this as well...). SD in fact is one of my favorite places in the USA.

Interestingly, having a dull, boring silver M235 typically inoculates me from stoplight ass-clowns. Most don't know what it is to begin with... Other than other BMW owners driving real "M" cars versus our "fake" "M" cars (I have had a few M3 owners try to impress me with their cars), it could be anything from a pick-up to a Sonata. Here in CT, it is all about getting to and running the next red light; being a the head of the line is crucial.

At a stop? Nobody so far. I'm stage 2/catless DP and aside from minor cosmetic mods from the rear (black roundel, carbon fiber spoiler, debadged, etc.), it is stock-looking otherwise. Plus I try to drive it in Eco mode around town.

On the freeways though, it's mostly American cars that do flybys only, they never try to line up. (Chargers, Mustangs, Camaros, etc.)

My car is debadged and a lot of people seem to think it must be slow. Get all kinds of challengers. Skoda 2.0T cars seem to be most common. Actually beat a Ferrari California once. Shouldn’t have but the guy had no idea how to drive. Would love to see how I do against one of the many cocky Mustang V8s with loud exhausts in my city.

Strangely its the non-sporty Mercedes owners. If someone in a 63/43/45/53 AMG car wanted a friendly 0-40 stoplight race then sure, I can understand. But a CLA 250 or a C 300? Really?
