Dude I would even get this thing even if I was keeping the car for a month. It is THAT useful. There is nothing more liberating than not having to put your finger on that stupid button for 30 seconds haha

Or walking away from the car in style as the top folds.

Orrrr... opening the top from across the parking lot

There are at least 100 things more liberating than that

Seriously though, for the 10 or so times I probably opened the top due to barely driving the car, doesn't make much sense to invest anything into it.

Son of a gun...that is way cool! Darn it, need to find some spare change now. There goes my savings for a new exhaust.

So for those of you who already got their new key fobs:

1. Any issues with functionality? Does it work every single time?
2. Have you taken the car to the dealer and used the upgraded fob to read the car info? The vendor website says no issues, but looking for real world experience. Would hate to lose a key fob...
3. What locksmith would re-key the back up key? Would the normal hardware store do it, or it's a dealer visit only?

Just wanted to see if anyone got their keys back?

I'm waiting on him to get stock for the 3 button key. Decided to wait on it since I already had my key sent and paid for.

Anyway, any updates?

Got my key back also - looks first class - even if the fob used isn't a genuine BMW fob - it's hard to notice. It definitely has more weight thant the original black plastic fob, and looks like something suited to an M / M lite product. Now I need to get the actual key cut.

Got mine back a couple of days ago. The key looks and feels great. However, it looks to be the case that I could still inadvertently open the trunk. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a cover that would reduce the risk of this without covering up the key completely and without being huge?

Also, any thoughts on where to get the metal key cut? Would a dealer get irritated about doing it? Fortunately I realized that it is easy to put the metal key from the original key fob on my key ring, so there is no rush, but this work-around is not very elegant.

Need! One of my biggest complaints. My wife's 5 series has the new fob and it's a 2018...In escrow right now and don't need to spend extra. But so tempted

I called a bunch of auto locksmiths until I found one who was willing to copy a BMW key. Cost me $40 in Philadelphia.

Update: the copied key works fine in the glove but doesn't work in the door. :

Buyer beware. This is where I had it copied...

Made me think of Trading Places

Fifty bucks? No, no, no. This is a Rouchefoucauld. The thinnest water-resistant watch in the world. Singularly unique, sculptured in design, hand-crafted in Switzerland, and water resistant to three atmospheres. This is the sports watch of the '80s. Six thousand, nine hundred and fifty five dollars retail!

Seems hard to find a locksmith that will cut the key here in my area, mid Delaware.

Did you install this yourself? Looks somewhat involved, removing the back seat, trim pieces, etc. I would hate to break something just to have a convenience item. Although the 30 second holding down the button is very annoying.

OP, thanks for sharing! Always wanted to update the look of my key, and now it's feasible!

For those with three button key fobs (no alarm) your new key will look like the below. The black piece throws off the clean look imo.

I reached out to George via IG to see if the four button key would work with a three button module, short answer is yes, but you will lose trunk functionality. He did say he could potentially supply a fourth button just for looks which would be a slightly darker shade of silver. Waiting to see the results, will update once I get my key back.

UPDATE: Key just came in. Looks amazing and works great!

Got mine as well, very similar to the x5m key fob even in weight, the tri-color is just a little off if you put them side by side

My brother ordered the same one
He liked it , and recently I decided to install a similar one
Unfortunately, there were no masters in my city who would install such a system of locks for me, and I went to the city to visit my uncle, who is engaged in this professionally. He told me to order the same key and when it would be delivered to me, so that I would come to him. I was also recommended to look at https://www.howtobecomealocksmith.org/locks-for-storage-units/ some locks and I chose one of these, and my uncle installed me without any problems.
I am very happy with this key system, it is really convenient. However, it is a pity that I could not get exactly the same locks with key rings as you have ! I would very much like to have exactly the same key rings.

FYI to anyone thinking about doing this mod but is on the fence about it because of the key cutting issue:

Key cutting is now done in-house at gates innovations and is included free with the purchase of the F-Chassis modification service
