So did my father, he was too young to enlist in the USA, Canada would take you if you were younger. By the time he arrived to Canada, they were no longer taking Americans, so he went back to the USA. Took him so long to get home that he was then old enough to enlist. Was in the Army Air Corps.

I think that is about accurate, yes. My father enlisted late on, ended up on B29's in the Army Air Core, but the war was officially over by the time he made it to Europe.

He was the nose gunner and told me stories of them trying to fly off the fields mowed out for B-17's, which weren't really long enough. Said all the B-29's had all the paint scraped off the bottom of the fuselage due to trimming the trees on take-off.
