First track day - Stock
Hey all,
Thought I'd share my experience taking my 2018 M240xi Coupe to the track for the first time to Toronto Motorsports Park. I'm a novice at the whole tracking experience and it was my first time on track (minus all the virtual hours in GT6 and F1 lol). The car had about 3000KM so I didn't get a brake fluid flush as it's less than 6 months old. Everything is stock on this car and has MPSS tires fitted and MPE. Overall this car is phenomenal stock! Initially I wasn't pushing as hard as some of the veterans but held my own. Once I got accustomed to the track and temps were good with the tires and engine, it really became a joy to drive. What a sound that exhaust makes in Sport mode! So addictive hearing it shift and downshift. The car felt planted through the corners at 90+ kph. The max speed on the straights was approx 160kph which this car hit no problem. Under braking, this car was stable and predictable. No issues with temp, on my hot laps the temps hit just over 120 C. The tires were a bit worn on the edges, but generally held up well over the 35 laps (approx 100km distance). Definitely will be looking for more track events. Cheers. |

That's the truth for sure - It can be habit forming. I started this season signing up for a 'taste of the track' (single 20m session) and before I'd even arrived had bumped up to full-day; then signed up for 2 more the next Monday. Started to say things to myself like 'you aren't in too deep, you don't have a tow vehicle yet'. And now in the early stages of the 'do I keep tracking my DD or look for a track car'.
You should certainly keep us in mind down here in NYS for Watkins Glen - so far I've been running w/ the Genesee Valley BMWCCA, but many other options to drive it w/ other groups too. I suspect that the Sept date is sold out, but worth checking. |

Hahaha, definitely addicted (I guess admitting it is the first step lol).
Hopefully anyone who reads this post and was apprehensive about taking the vehicle on the track will have enough information to take the plunge. For novice drivers like me, I doubt I'll be able to push the car past it's tolerances to even cause any damage. The M240i is built tough, despite my brain thinking otherwise (ie: oh it's a consumer vehicle only for looks). Again, it's all about fun in a controlled environment, better to go fast on a track then risk getting pulled over by the cops and losing your car and licence. Walkins Glen would be amazing to try out. I've only ever tried it virtually in GT6 with a racing wheel. Perhaps a lapping vacation |
