Staggered setup, which offset to choose?

I'm looking at getting a set of staggered Enkei Raijin, 18x8 38mm front and 18x8.5 38mm rear, with the stock size tires, 225 up front and 245 rear (M Sport and THP car).

Is there any clearance issue with the THP setup and 38mm offset? Tirerack recommends 42mm but I'd like to go out to 38mm.

I can tell you I'm running 18x8 et40 up front on Dinan springs/bump stops and 235 MPS4S with no rubbing or issues. Use this calculator to compare what you want to run to the stock set-up. I've plugged the front stock set-up in on the left already and my set-up on the right. Just mod the inputs on the right to check the fitment you want. Same applies to the rear, just change the left side for stock set-up and right for the fitment you want to checkout.

I'm running 265 rear on 18x9 et 50 with no issues as well. Both front and rear fitment are relatively conservative (no poke) compared to what you see on 2 series. Your proposed set-up rear will give you a few millimeters of poke at the rim, but will probably look pretty flush. Scrub radius will change by 14mm, which is a lot, but not sure how that would impact handling since it is in the rear.

8x18 ET38 front is perfect. 8.5x18 ET38 rear is a bit too much, if not the way it's going to look certainly the way it's going to handle - I am not talking about possible rubbing, you are going to get a much more stable rear, which is fine if you shoot down a straight line but not so fine if you want to turn because you'll get noticeably more understeer.

8x18 ET38 front and 9x18 ET44 rear are the magic numbers for the stock staggered tire sizes, both the way it looks and the way it handles. imho. (at least, I wouldn't go over 8x18 et37 front and 9x18 et43 rear).

The crappy thing with our cars is the 52mm rear. There aren't many options available in 43+ in 18's. Most common offsets available are 35-40 with a few 42's but choices get very limited after that.

This is all new to me, could you explain? DK how altering offset would affect turning on rear.

Those widths and offsets are close to what I have been looking for. What wheels do you have?

Peter- They are custom BC Forged KL 12 Forged Monblocks. Some pics on this page of the non-VMR wheel thread about half way down:

The rear on our cars, of course, does not actually turn but a wider track in the rear, whether it's because the wheels are set farther apart or wider wheels are used, makes the rear end less willing to slide in a turn which translates into less oversteer and consequently more understeer (a wide rear end lets go later than a narrow rear end). This mostly applies to wider rear wheels which apparently get you more grip in the rear relative to the front but also, to a lesser degree, to a wider rear track with the same size wheels.

Alternatively, if you only widen the front track leaving the rear intact you get a more stable front end (relative to the rear) that translates into a less sharp turn in and a bit wider turn radius, less agile in tighter spaces/turns, but the rear end will let go easier relative to the front, especially when you apply throttle.

You may try to think of it as in bicycle vs tricycle. Anyway, it's always about the balance of front vs rear.

I agree with these statements, for stock widths and diameters.

I currently have 8"xET45 up front, albeit with 235/35R19 Sport Cup 2s, which are extremely wide.

I have an 9"xET40 rear, with 265/30R19. This pokes and an ET45 would have been better. I am pretty sure you could go higher.

Thanks, I didn't get any replies for a few days so I ended up with the 18x8 42mm offset from Tirerack after chatting with them. They said the 38mm might poke a bit in the back, so I just decided to stick with their recommendation.

I'll have stock staggered tires but square rim sizes. 225 and 245 stock tire setup is what I'm sticking with, some brand new MPSS going on the rears once I get the rims mounted. Should fit perfectly, thanks for the advice all.
