Catted high-flow downpipe
Any here actually installed an aftermarket afe or evo racewerks catted downpipe 200 cell per sq in or 300 cell. Was curious if they still cause check engine light issues, and what actual gain from stock compared to a full catless downpipe. I need it to be street legal /pass inspections.

Yah I get that catless is more gain.. but if spend 2x the amount for a proper high flow catted DP i would expect no CEL, so i just want to find that out first. Surely evo and afe had to test these in real BMW's ?

The problem is usually high flow catted dps will not cause a CEL right away but over time they will. That is the main reason why I chose catless on my 335 and will be installing catless on my 2er because in the long run high flow catted is a waste.

I have 2014 M135i with N55 EWG, BCS hi flow cat 4" DP and JB4 Stg 2 for 6 months +.
On map 0 and map 4, contrary to what BD F22 implies, I don't get a CEL. Car was dyno'd after installing the DP. Crank power and torque was 320/330 standard and once map 6 was fettled, it gave 380/450. I chose HFC DP as a fit and forget solution here in UK, sounds nicer to my ears than decat with mpe installed [less raspy] and any extra gains decat may have over HFC are minimal.

I had AR catted DPs on my e91 n54 335i touring. Ran for 5 years and ~ 70k miles. Never had a problem passing annual inspection incl emissions test. It may have been due to me leaving midpipe secondary cats in place however a pal of mine has e90 n55 [no 2nd cats in the midpipe] fitted with AR DP with 100k+ miles on the clock. No issues either.

I've had plenty of high-flow catalytic converters fail on other cars. Fact of the matter is, most of the aftermarket stuff are nowhere near the quality that the OEM's are. Ever seen the price of an OEM catalytic? Compare that to the $400 or so you might be charged extra for welding an aftermarket one on.

If you have had such bad luck with sports cats in the past, suggest you consider using aftermarket upgrades that feature the likes of HJS in Germany, who make oem hi-flo products for AMG, Alpina, RUF etc etc etc.
The cat v decat debate will always rumble on regardless........

Love it, pretty heated debates going on here..
Still a mystery, CEL may not come on for a while.. What is the actual flow difference between a quality 4" high flow catted DP, and a freeflow non-catted one.. There has to be some scientific measure of airflow (CFM) that some of these aftermarket companies test their products with. |

Not necessarily. As I stated above, with my JB4 in map 0 ie off, I don't get a CEL with BCS HFC DP fitted to my car.

Have you driven 75 miles on Map 0? The computer only checks for O2 to throw CEL every 75 miles. If you turn it to Map 0 and drive 3 miles, obviously it won't throw CEL.

I have BCS HFC installed for more than 6months. I do have JB4 on map 5. It does not have CEL, however, I do have a error code on my P3 stating 013 which I believe it's O2 sensor error cause by the HFC..

My wife drove it for ~ 2 weeks with JB4 off. No CEL. Both BCS and Wagner claim their HFC DP does not cause a CEL. From my experience, I can validate BCS's claim at least. Cateye - I regularly use maps 2, 5 and 6 - no codes. You may have a leak on one of sensors into the DP or a loose connection at the other end where the sensor plugs in.

But on our cars it is another story since the cars where made for another eu norm. You cant compare it to the e-series models.
They will all throw a cel light sooner or later. Even Wagner catted dps throw codes on our cars. Manhart has a tricky solution for that so you could get their catted dp or you could go for the new lightwight performance downpipe. This has the first hjs cats made to keep the euro 6 norm. |

More details on the EU 6 compliant manhart products please. Not much on MH website.
Friedrich Motorsport also use HJS cats in their HFC. http://www.fms-tuning.de/product_inf...port-Kat-.html |

This Supersprint version is an HJS cat, is it really worth 3x the amount of the Evolution or AFE versions mentioned in first post..
