start up sound so good, running not so much

2018 m240i xdrive convertible with MPE. the MPE for 2018 does not have the flap. cold start idles about 1100 and sounds really good. as soon as i touch the gas, it quiets, even if i bring the revs back up. it's just more muted.

how does it do that?

It's not the flap. My flap is always open and the noise dials way down after 30 seconds.

yes. couldn't be the flap: i have no flap. so i wonder what's going on.
