brake dust, OEM pads
So I have had my 230i with regular floating calipers for about a month now and I have not noticed any brake dust on the wheels between washes.
Granted there have been a lot of washes because the car is BSM and shows every speck of dirt but still I would have expected to see some--even on gray wheels. I have heard rumors of lower dust OEM pads for years and have tried them on previous BMWs when new part numbers were released and always had the same good performance and significant dusting. Is it finally true that BMW has fitted lower dust OEM pads to late model cars without sport brakes or just lots of washes + gray wheels fooling me? |

I can now answer this definitively: OEM brake pads that come on the base slider brakes do not dust--or only dust like a low dust ceramic pad. I switched to the M Performance brakes on my 230i and boom, normal BMW brake dust is back.

Yes, but I was kind of exceeding their recommended use, so they would likely be fine for street use. I swapped in a set (at least 70% left) on the second day of an HPDE because I'd worn thru the semi-track pads, and they were down to rivets by the end of the day. Bonus from this was learning I could enter (and survive) the bus stop going a lot faster than I'd initially thought . Prior to this I'd never had trouble with them fading or going soft in spirited street driving, but I did wear down the rear pads quickly (replaced c. 20k miles IIRC) apparently because this is where the TCS does it's magic if you drive hard. The guys at Zeckhausen thought they could be made to work on track with dedicated track pads (but just barely); swapping pads on these is such a chore that I just moved up to the BBK. I didn't notice a lot of dust, but hard to compare since I also changed wheels w/ the BBK (the stock kit pads for that haven't been 'dust monsters' but I do get some).

Would those low dust stock pads fit the M235i?

Not those exact ones--they were for the gray floating caliper brakes on the 230 or 228 without THP.
I don't mind the dust because washing and shining up my car is one of my primary hobbies but when I go to replace these I will likely look for something that dusts less... Maynard or drader does anyone make aftermarket pads for the M Performance brakes? |
