M235i with Non-staggered Tires, can I put staggered tires?

Hey guys,

Bought a used 2016 M235i about three weeks ago and have been loving every second of it. I'm starting to look into some modifications, and one of the most obvious first options is a tune.

When I bought the car, it came with the Pirelli Cinturato P7s, which are the non-staggered tires all around. If I were to add a tune I would be looking at the Dinan Sport Tuner, and as a result be adding ~30HP/40ft/lb torque. I already spin sometimes when flooring it stock, so I was hesitant to get the tune as I assume I would spin much more often. I was just wondering whether I would be able to fit something like 245s on the rear tires or all around on the stock Style 436 rims. I'm somewhat new to a car with a moddable platform so not exactly sure how wheel fitments and stuff works.

Thanks!

I believe as long as the car is not awd (xdrive) you should be good to go. You should take a look at this forum for some great info. http://www.2addicts.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=521

You're wheels are 7.5" wide at all four corners and comes with 225/40R18 tires. The cars equipped with staggered tires (225/40R18 front and 245/35R18 rear) run 8" wide rear rims and 7.5" wide rims up front. The largest tire you can safely fit on a 7.5" rim is a 225. You'll need to acquire a OEM set of 18X8 rims to run 245s out back. As for spinning the tires, I have the staggered wheels with the OEM Pilot Super Sport tires. I still easily spin them all through 1st, partially through 2nd, and occasionally in 3rd. No engine mods either.

I would say instead of running staggered on your OEM 7.5in wide wheels, just spring for new wheels, or used M235i staggered wheels. Usually you can score a decent deal on a used wheel/tire package. Can check the wheels and tires forum here, or ebay etc.

But you wont really notice better grip unless you go 255+ width in the rear. Even on the stock 245s, and now with 255s I can get them loose quite easily.

if you can get a good 9.5in width rear and wrap a 265 around it would help a bit in that department.

If you have an automatic, it does a better job at managing the wheel spin. The 6MTs have more turbo lag and that lag followed by a big surge of torque is what causes the traction issues in 2nd and sometimes 3rd. Only when the tires are fully warm and the pavement hot do I not have traction issues. My narrower winter 225 width tires have far more straightline grip than my Pilot Super Sports which are only half worn. A really soft and pliable tread compound goes a long way in the straightline. Terrible in the turns and braking though.

Yep, consider this. If you want a wheel that's similar to the M2/3/4 wheels and the new M5 wheels, consider the 18X8 Alutec Drives available from Tire Rack. They're not expensive and are made in the same factory as the stock wheels. The best part of the wheels, besides the OEM+ look and the wheels sitting about 10mm closer to the fender edge, is the fact that you can run 245s in the front. That's a huge deal to me.
