Faulty engine mounts could also cause this sort of issue, potentially caused by a previous accident or just a premature failure from a manufacturing defect.

Nortonman, if your posts are an indication of how you communicated to the service advisor it's not surprising that you got a lot of unnecessary work. The lack of useful information means the tech tries the most common explanations first.

You still haven't made clear whether the vibration is purely speed dependent or is more dependent on engine load rather than speed, which is probably the basis of Aerobod's suggestion. There are simple ways to vary engine load without changing speed much, which you should have tried before you took the car in for repair. The tech can't spend a lot of time on a test drive, and if the shop is in the centre of a city there might not even be a practical way to assess the vibration at highway speeds, so a thorough description is important if the cause of the problem is unusual.

The only place I took the car to that had BMW familiar techs was the place that fixed my trunk and the bent rim. The other places were just tire shops with more or less shade tree mechanics that they normally hire but were recommended by the company that handles the warranty.

I do plan on taking the car to one or the other of the foreign car specialists here in town hopefully soon.

When the vibes begin at around 40rpm I have shifted it into neutral and it stays the same as far as the vibration is concerned if that makes a difference. They disappear at around 55.

You can't rely upon Carfax to know if the car has been in a wreck.

Not every place that works on cars reports to Carfax. I don't know for sure, but I suspect this is even more true when insurance isn't paying for the work.

I sort of knew that but figured if it was in a bad enough wreck to make it drive that lousy that a person wouldn't be footing the bill.

Not sure what to do at this point except try one of the shops again and hope for the best and I appreciate all the posts.

The fundamental first step is diagnosing the root cause. It sounds like some techs have been guessing. If me, I would find the most well-regarded BMW dealer in the area. Meet with the service manager first and share the history and symptoms. After that conversation, then ask which technician he regards for diagnostic skills and ensure the appointment with that person. If the problem seems evasive, ask when the BMW Service rep is next scheduled to be visiting that dealership for his/her thought process.

Yep. Sometimes you just need to spend the money and take it to a dealer.

Is there not a BMW dealer in your area?

No there is not, just two foreign car specialty service shops that both have a fairly good reputation.
