235i won't stay in sport mode

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hey all,

I have a 2015 m235i that recently decided it doesn't like to be put into sport mode. If I am stopped I can put the car in sport or sport plus, but as soon as I start moving for a few seconds it automatically puts itself back into comfort mode. This has never happened to me before until a few days ago.

Now another thing that happened at the same time is that I have a low tire pressure warning because of the weather getting colder. I'm wondering if the car is smart enough to not let me put it into sport because it has low tire pressure?

Any help would be appreciated thanks!

you nailed it. If your tire pressure is low, the car automatically puts itself into comfort as a safety precaution. Go fill up them tires and kick it!

Yep that's exactly it this time of year I always have to stop into the dealer to get my tires filled. Cold air is smaller than warm air.

I will say it's mildly alarming when traveling at highway speed when the warning goes off, but it always happens in the fall.

yes, you can't go into sport with the warning on....

you can always just reset the TPMS and should let you go into sport right afterwards...

Awesome, thanks for the help everyone. Really debating just getting nitrogen to help with the pressure fluctuations from temperature.

You realize plain old air is already ~80% nitrogen, right? That last 20% really makes very little difference at the temps and pressures that car tires see. These are not airplanes or F1 cars... Given the prices shops charge for nitrogen fills, is it really so difficult to stop by a place with an air pump once a year?

Well, the reason people use nitrogen (and by people, I mean race car drivers) is b/c nitrogen doesn't migrate through the tire as easily as oxygen.

Or buy a small air compressor for less than $100.Or cheaper yet, an air tank that can filled up at a service station air pump. I have both.

My dealership charged me a flat fee for the nitrogen and don't even charge when I swap winter/summer tires now.

For those of us who are not landing aircraft nor driving race cars, nitrogen has been an excellent marketing program which has contributed to dealer margins....

I have a small compressor at home, and top up my tires as needed with 78% N2, as noted, which we call "air".

Which simply is not a major issue in a normal passenger car tire that isn't leaky to start with. And the reason race car (and aircraft) engineers use Nitrogen is that it is more stable across a wide range of temperatures. An aircraft tire can see temp swings of 150F+ in the course of a single flight. My car sees temp swings of about 115F across SIX MONTHS. When you check and adjust tire pressures all the time anyway, as on a race car, the fact that it is very slightly less likely to leak through the rubber is pretty irrelevant. But both of these things are just not important AT ALL on a street driven car.

The one thing that IS probably good about a full nitrogen fill in a street car is that the nitrogen fill probably will be dryer than a regular air fill. But if you use an air compressor that has a dryer, that won't be an issue either. Many gas station compressors do not, my home compressor does. But even then, it is unlikely to make a difference other than in extreme cases.

Nitrogen fill in street car tires is a scam, full stop. But if you want to pay the money, be my guest, I won't stop you.
