BMW M240i Servicing intervals and Details, Confused.

OK, so Ive owned my M240i for just under a year now. I got the 3 year service pack thrown in for free when I purchased (£299RRP) but I am a bit confused.

Ive gone into the app service details and idrive and it says it needs the following

Oil Service (10/2019) (£240RRP)
Brake Fluid (10/2020) (£72RRP)
Vehicle Check (10/21) (£95RRP) (Out of the service plan)

the oil and brake fluid fall within the 3 year service pack. So, even if I paid for it, it still works out cheaper, albeit only £13.

My confusion is what about the big service (oil, plugs, air filter) which is £648 on the BMW website. when does that need doing, there is no option for this on the idrive so how can the car tell me when it needs doing? the website says every 2 years or 18,000 from last inspection, as my last inspection was a pre delivery inspection will I be able to get this on its 2 year anniversary which is currently saying only an oil service will be due.

And also what about coolant changes? there is no option for this on the idrive so how will I know when this is due?

The 2 series has a manual within idrive. If I’m not mistaken, and it’s been a while since I’ve checked, but the service intervals should be in there. That’s usually where most manufacturers post the service intervals for all of their vehicles.

My m240i is sitting around 25k miles, had 2 oil changes at the dealership, and I thought brakes were due at 25k. Service advisor told me nothing was due except oil at 30k. (All mileage is in ... miles).

Found a bmw dealership in Ohio who posted the 2 series service intervals.

https://www.bmwofcincinnatinorth.com...e-schedule.htm

10k miles - oil, oil filter, coolant
20k-40k miles - fuel filter
30k miles - first brake fluid change
60k miles - successive brake fluid change (after the initial), spark plugs and air filter

The fuel filter service is only for diesel vehicles, gasoline ones don't have a scheduled replacement. Coolant also isn't changed with the oil, as quoted. The brake fluid is changed on time, 3 years for the first change, 2 year intervals after that.

Thanks for that!

I'm going into BMW of Cincinnati North at 2 PM today for an oil change, and the OP's question is one I'm going to ask. In the expectation that I'd find the traditional service interval chart in it, I looked in the Maintenance booklet that came with my car, but it's not there.

Update: Just looked at BMW Cincy N.'s maintenance page on batteries and found the following:

"Batteries don't always give warning signs before they fail; at BMW of Cincinnati North, we suggest replacing batteries that are over three years old."

That surprised me. IIRC, don't battery replacements at BMW dealers cost fairly major bucks?

From my Canadian Service and Warranty Guide:

Oil - by CBS (Condition Based Service) indicator or at least once per year.
Microfilter - every 2nd oil change.
Brake Fluid - every 2 years or when specified by CBS indicator (initial change is 3 years from production date).
Intake Air Cleaner - every 3rd oil change or more frequently in dusty environments.
Fuel Filter (diesel vehicles only) - every 3rd oil change.
Vehicle Check - by CBS indicator or every 4 years.
Automatic Transmission Fluid - 160,000km.
Oxygen Sensor - 195,000km.
Spark Plugs - by CBS indicator.
Brake Pads - by CBS indicator.
Coolant - on system repair only.

LMFAO that's a way to get you to spend stupid money. My Z3 battery lasted 7 years before I sold it off. My E92 I had for 5 years and the battery was still going strong when I got rid of it and my current F22 is now on 4 years without issue.

FWIW, visited a local BMW indy mechanic and racer, and his perspective was that the oil and filter should be changed every 5000 miles. Said not doing that for the cost was crazy.

Just saying.

Highly recommended every 5k if racing, tracking, etc. otherwise as a DD 10k is sufficient. However, a $60 oil change twice as often to protect a 10k investment (cost of a new motor) is definitely a no brainer.

Where can you get a new N55 or B58 motor for $10K, before labor costs?

Pelican Parts lists short blocks as follows:

N55 - New: $20.5K; Reman.: $14.3K
B58 - New: $14.8K; Reman.: $13.0K

Maybe a remanufactured B58 can be had for 20% or more less than Pelican's prices?

What do you figure for labor - another $4-6K, depending upon the book and the shop's labor rate?

Do you know if the Microfilter is the oil filter?

Does your guide show an interval for the manual transmission?

The microfilter is the climate system intake filter. The oil filter is changed as part of the oil change. There is no information that specifies a change interval for the manual transmission or differential(s)

I recommend changing the oil and filter every 7k miles. I changed the oil and filter at 1200 miles. I installed a new BMW filter and LiquiMoly oil (5W-30). I did 2 track weekends and changed the oil and filter again on the recommendation of a top BMW tech. I’m retired military and there’s a base less than 2 miles away. The base has a large auto hobby shop with lifts and tools. So changing the oil and filter is easy for me.

Maybe not from "BMW", but from Mike Miller's "Lifetime Maintenance Schedule" and the author of the monthly "Tech Talk" in the BMWCCA Roundel magazine, he says:

Break-in Service for New Cars and Rebuilt Driveline Components: 1,200 miles
Before maintenance became “free” during the warranty, BMW performed a break-in
service at 1,200 miles on new cars, which included changing the engine oil and filter,
manual gearbox oil, and differential oil. With the advent of Free Scheduled Maintenance,
BMW stopped performing break-in services except on M cars.

He goes on to say:

"If you are going to trade, sell, or return your car during the BMW New Vehicle Limited
Warranty or even much before 100,000 miles there is no reason to perform extra
maintenance other than helping out subsequent owners of the car. If you get out of the car
during the warranty or even much before 100,000 miles, superior maintenance is not
likely to affect your ownership experience with one exception, the manual gearbox – it
will shift better if you change its oil at the reasonable intervals discussed here
".

So it's up to you, and how long you plan to keep the car. Roll the dice, or don't.

I would say at 100,000km / 60,000 miles, no matter which vehicle, I would do the following to refresh the vehicle, besides normal maintenance items:

- Change all fluids that haven’t been done to date (transmission, diff(s) / transfer case, coolant, power steering when not electric; assuming engine / brakes / clutch fluids have been done multiple times already).
- Dampers / struts and strut bearings.
- Any suspension bushings that are not in perfect condition without any surface cracks or distortion.
- Drive belts.
- Any brake hoses that are not in perfect condition without surface cracking or deterioration.
- Spark plugs if not done already.
