M2 envy support group

I am baege and I have M2 envy

I was intending to buy an m2, when I watched a review of the m240i and was intrigued. I test drove both and ended up with an m240i.

But i get "M2" envy when I see an M2 around town...I think it's the best looking car in the BMW lineup with its compact muscular design. It also sounds very good (better than my m240i with mpe).

So I often have to remind myself of the reasons I picked the m240i over the m2...to make myself feel better

Here are my reasons:
I liked the b58 more than the n55. The n55 seemed more laggy to me> it also doesn't feel as torquey.
I liked the more comfortable adaptive ride of the m240i...I had a cayman S previously with the x73 suspension and 20's and the rough ride was really starting to get to me
the m240i without the flared fenders feels even more compact than the m2, I liked how easy it was to maneuver
the xdrive attracted me as living in a condo in the great white north means the bi-annual switchover is an annoying hassle

Ok your turn

Admitting you have a problem is the first step. But most people with envy describe themselves as “green”, not a version of light tan! Unusual spelling, though.

I don’t even have 6 cylinder envy. For where I live and the driving environment and the lighter front end, a 4 was a top choice. M2 bone-crusher on our Moonchigan roads? Haha...no thanks!

One of these winters, when your 240 doesn’t stop/turn soon enough (which Xdrive won’t help), you’ll realize you actually have winter tire envy!

The only reason I'd choose an M2 over the M240 is for more choices regarding wheel & tire fitment. That wasn't enough of a reason to go with the M2.

i do like the muscular look of the m2, and much prefer dsg to 8at. but i prefer the convertible top and xdrive even more.

When I see other 2’s around town, I sometimes regret that i didn’t get the m-sport package because it looks so good with an MP or RPK lip and diffuser. Then I remember that aero effects are minor at reasonable street speed and don’t mind so much. I’ll eventually get around to doing something fully custom once the factory warranty runs out and the thought of drilling into my baby doesn’t scare me so much.

Where I do have M2 envy is in those flared out fenders. I’ve seen guys on the M2 forums fitting squared 18x10’s with 275mm track tires, and that seems like a perfect setup for the weight and power these cars have. The narrow body 2’s seem like they can only fit an 8.5J wheel with 255mm tires after extensive camber changes and fender rolling, and that still might not be enough tire for the car’s power and weight.

I have seen a few 9.0J / 255mm square setups mentioned but wheel choice seems to be very limited unless you go with something custom from forged blanks, and even then I’m not sure exactly what combination of camber, offsets, and spacers are required to make it work.

Bmw could learn alot from porsche in terms of making wheel upgrades available as factory options.

I think a big part of the M2's better appearance are the 19's that fill the wheel wells so well...if a similar set of 19's that fit the m240i had been option from the factory I would have been all over that

I have zero envy of the M2, but the M2 Competition is a different story.

I have a bit of M2 envy also. I mean, who doesn't want an M car? There is no doubt the M2 is more sporty, and I love the wider mean stance. I routinely find myself running the configurator on the BMW web site and dreaming a bit. Especially now that the CS is out there.

But then, reality takes hold. My 235 is a daily driver, 365 days a year. It spends a few days at the track, but 99% of the driving is dreary commuting, and I really love comfort mode for that. I know several people with M2's, and the rough ride is something they endure most days, not enjoy. And the black only interior of the M2, which is really dark with the carbon trim, really puts me off.

If I'm honest with myself, my 235 just fits me better in every way than an M2. Still fun to daydream though. And if they ever add adaptive suspension and some interior colors, well......

M2 envy? No. Read and watched too many articles/videos by professional drivers suggesting the M2's advantage is only at the track. Unless you really need to show off its aggressive looks.

My wife is not a car person - my God she bought a Vega in the day - but she was transfixed by the $102k silver M5 in the showroom. So maybe M5 envy, but we'd get into way to much trouble with that level of performance.

So true. Drove the M2 and thought it was good but not worth a premium over the M235/M240 now the M2 Comp is another story. I'd take it over an F80 in a heartbeat.

You're going to make me start an M240i envy support group...

Edit: Hell, a 2 series envy support group actually, until I ante up the cash for a used 228i here sometime soon!

Not that I would do it, but what would a "partial" de-badge look like...as if someone stole the 40i off the back?

I prefer the M240 looks wise because I don't like the fat ass of the M2. The M2 is a much harsher ride too.

I envy the 718 Boxster S a little but there's always something better isn't there?

The quality of sports cars that are affordable is so high these days. It's really splitting hairs at this point.

I went to the dealer intending to order an M2, but at the time pre-orders for the M240i were about to start and the M2 was going for 10k over MSRP and there were waiting lists everywhere.. so I "settled" for the M240i. Told them to let me know when I could order my M240i and that's it.. I do regret it, but what can you do?

I like subtle and supple and the M2 is seriously lacking in both. It is TOO FAT and it rides like a brick. Fine for the boy racer crowd, not for us cruisers.
I smile every time I get into my 235 and expect to do so for quite some time. Plus, all the ignoranti out there think it's an M-car and I don't disabuse them. I can have my cake and eat it too!

A 12mm spacer set and LCA helped alleviate episodes of M2 envyitis... For now.
When I ordered I my 2015 M235, it was the difficult-to-get hot BMW, especially in 6MT; and the M2 was nothing but a rumor. I love my car for its Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality, but I have to admit, every time I lay my eyes on the M2's just about perfect muscular stance, I have the sudden urge to drive to the nearest BMW dealer...The only thing that preventing me from pulling the trigger, is the prospect of monthly payments; and a kid to eventually send to college.
This is shaping up to be a fun thread though...

I dont envy the M2 or M2 Competition in any way other than the flared fenders and ability to fit more rubber on the wheels.

I think the B58 is a better engine that the N55 and S55.
B58 makes great power, easily makes much more, and has no turbo lag.
While the S55 makes more power it also made the cars weight go up 100+lbs.

If I were to wreck my car today, an M2 would be in my garage ASAP. I'd order a M2C tomorrow, but it just seems silly right now considering I'm still playing around with my M235 which I still do love plus the used N55 M2 prices are plummeting.

IMO though, the M2 is a better car in every sense except for perhaps the harsher ride. If I got an M2, I'd do coilovers and adjust the ride to my liking. The adaptive shocks and OEM springs on the M235/240 just don't perform particularly well in either setting.

One thing that would be difficult with the M2 is that it's already setup very well from the factory both in performance and looks, especially the M2C. There's very little I could do to make it better and that would be a problem as I enjoy modding my cars to make them my own. I have no guilt making my M235 my own as it's easy to improve on. An M2 though, I'm afraid I'd screw it up.

I would have picked up M2 if I had walked into the nearer dealer rather than the one I picked the car from (m240i blew me away when I test drove it and I bought there and then). I do not have any regret whatsoever, but it has wet my appetite for M2c. The feeling I have is if m240i is this good, how better would M2c be. However I have always wondered would I notice the difference between 4.6s/60mile of m240i and 4.2s/60 miles of M2.
