I have LaFerrari envy, life's a b!tch, lol

All jokes aside, depending what you want from these cars, the M2 --> M235/40 is not much of a "step down", if you're looking at it from a price perspective. It's just more or less aligned to the buyers wants/needs. The M2C, different story altogether... Let's not go there lol

Since my car is paid for, my priorities are completely different than someone who leases for work, "has to have the newest car", or otherwise isn't happy without having the latest features, etc.

Have witnessed fellow m235i members jump to the M2, and now in a state of remorse due to the $$ lost on the F22, depreciation of the F87, and now the M2C is out, and even more remorseful.. At the end of the day, you gotta go with what will make you happy, and sometimes more=less

No envy at all, not even for the 6. I seldom really tap out my 228, and it puts a grin on my face every time I hit the start button. Lighter and better balanced is more to my liking than an extra 100hp I'd only use on an onramp (have to admit that a straight 6 feels right, but it would be overkill). These are niches, not a good-better-best; get the one that feels best, and you have won; those w/ serious regrets should do a trade-in, life is too short.

True story related to babaikram's question above:

Had to be more than 25 years ago, I write in to Road & Track telling them all their road test data is great, but what is a significant difference in 0-60, 1/4-mile and G's.

Those hacks stole my idea and began putting at the bottom of their Road Test Summary page that 0.3 sec to 60 is considered "significant", etc. Not sure I believe them.

Best way for us is get a M240i xdrive (4.2 says BMW) and drag a MT RWD version (4.6). In the snow

I think you'd get a significant difference even on dry pavement (perhaps not a full 0.3 sec in 0-60, but certainly noteable in 1/4mile). But anybody who buys a car strictly for those numbers is missing out big time; like choosing a partner based upon their measurements (I don't notice much 'hellcat envy' here).

For me, I liked the M2 looks, but not much else. Rougher ride, poorer MPG, higher insurance. Performance was so close and the M240i costs less also. I thought the DCT was big deal, but find the 8 speed to be a wonderful tranny and w/ BMW putting the ZF 8 speed rather than a DCT in the M5 is telling.

Put a mild tune on the M240i and the slight advantage in straight line performance the M2 has over the M240i vanishes in the rear-view mirror.

If I could re-skin my car w/ M2 panels, I'd do it, but too many negatives to the M2 for me to actually own one.

Not disparaging the M2 in any way. Just not practical from me since I don't track my cars. C&D or MT (can't recall now) had a "Best of" for 2017 and they had the M2 and the M240i both listed in the same breath as Best "car". So they are truly "kissin' cousins".

my garage door is only 8 feet wide, so I appreciate the extra two inches room I get with the M235i

If I had all the money in the world, I would just get an M2. But at the time I was buying, I would have had to spend another 14k to get the M2. Sure it's a better car, but I wasn't willing to pay that much more for the upgrades.

C&D just did a one-pager on the M2C. It seems the real deal. Unfortunately, about $15k-plus out of my price range. First guy to spot one on the road, please report in.

Having just picked up my M240 at the start of the month I can honestly say, at present I have zero M2 envy. I spent about a year ogling the 240 for what it is and Ticking practically every box I had for my next car.

-ZF 8spd (sounds silly, but my last car had a Dual clutch that shat the bed a few times...so I'm a little turned off of them, but for "logistical" reasons, manuals don't interest me much anymore)
-AWD (All my cars to date have been awd so it's a comfort AND Canadian winter thing)
-2 doors
-Great power
-Great engine
-Great noise
-Less common to see.....Quite honestly, I see far more M2's rolling around my area than I do other 2-series family members.

I know that if given the choice I honestly would take an M2. There's more to consider with the M2C, but I'm certain I'd still lean towards the 240.

Anything expensive in my neck of the woods (a fairly genteel suburb in London) is like a red rag to a bull. An M2 or even M-lite is going to get keyed, raced or stolen altogether. If I had the money and space for either, I'd probably take the M240i slightly over the M2 but that's only because I prefer a more relaxed ride most of the time. But if had either of them, I'd have emigrated by now.

saw a few when i was in germany.

looks good from the front, but didnt like the way the exhaust sits below the rear bumper. it looked like there was an inch too much of gap between the diffuser and the muffler.

M2 owner stopping in to do some research on the 2-series convertibles (lease takeover as 2nd car), and I found this thread. This urban legend about the M2 riding "like a brick" must have started with the C&D write-up. Sure, if you live in Michigan, Mogadishu or the surface of Neptune the ride will probably be too firm. Otherwise, this car is a gem. I've got 4000 miles in an M2 that say the M team's greatest accomplishment with this car is the suspension setup. It was also our biggest surprise - we'd read C&D and the ride quality was our main concern before we got the car. Then we got it and were reminded...don't believe everything you read. We knew it would be fast and we knew it would be fun, but we didn't think it would be this comfortable. And I'm 52...my boy racer days are well behind me and we use this car for business and with clients.

This agrees with the C&D staff's experience at the end of their 40K M2 test: half thought the car and its ride were the bee's knees, and the other half...well, they didn't care very much for the ride.

I've not driven or ridden in an M2, but I'm certain the ride wouldn't have bothered me.

I cured what little envy I exhibited by going above it.

Now, I suffer from acute McLarengitis.

I'd take my M Coupe back before I'd get worked up about an M2. Wouldn't mind having the M2 body on my M240i tho.

Am I crazy in thinking that m240i with performance grill and blackened wing mirror cover and rear spoiler sometimes looks better than M2?

Not if you own or plan to buy one, no you're not! There is no "better" other than what you prefer.
