Just did my tensioner. Like others have said, its a 30 min job. Take the airbox off, unbolt, etc. swap. boom, done.

I have been looking into the idler pully (228i) and can't seem to find much literature out there on replacements. Anyone do this themselves? Is the idler pulley something other than the roundy roundy thing on the tensioner?

thanks all,
CDV

Hey guys first post here. Just picked up a new to me 2016 m235i. Looked at my tensioner and saw this.

Is that “normal” ? Going in for an alignment at the dealer so I might just ask them next week.

Thanks!

No it's not normal, but they might try to convince you it is. I've replaced mine and it went from what you see to dead steady.

Normal. It's a spring loaded device. Of course it will bounce/move a bit. The news ones will loosen up a bit over time and do the same thing.

The ‘roundy roundy thing’ is the tensioner pulley, the idler pulley is the one to the right of the tensioner in the video posted above. That’s on an N55 though, not sure if the N20 has one.

same thing happened to me. Was driving home and suddenly saw a warning pop up that charging system malfunction. The belt was disintegrated.

Had a similar thing happen as OP. 2015 M235i with about 25k miles on the clock decided to drop the belt and self-destruct the pulley. Replaced under warranty but it's not fun being stranded 1.5 hours from home for such a simple issue in a nearly new car.
