Mine had many issues. 2014 m235i
1) idrive froze frequently (resolved after dealer reset it)
2) charge pipe popped, replaced with ER CP
3) transmission oil pan leak, replaced oil pan kit
4) oil filter housing engine oil leak, replaced gasket
5) turbo inlet pipe broke after replacing gasket for the engine oil leak

As far as I'm concerned, BMW is not reliable. However, I may be just really darn unlucky.

interesting post and 'Wow' Hong Kong.

I had a 1998 W202 Mercedes and under warranty I had; hood latch alarm go bad, accessory belt damper go bad, rear brake pad puck installed incorrectly from factory, radio static (unit replaced). But the engine/ transmission were rock solid for around 100,000 miles till I got rid off car. Body was rock solid and I always considered the car incredibly reliable because the things that went wrong - to me I considered ancillary parts or supplier parts.

1 is not really an issue if reset fixes it, just some bug. 2 is pretty common especially if boosted, but it's an easy fix. 4. It's just a small gasket, if it wasn't replaced or properly installed previously then you would have this, also easy fix.

As shown by TrueDelta's reliability findings for the 2 Series, the 2014 model year had *somewhat* worse reliability compared to the subsequent 2015+ years.

The 2014s were still excellent; just not quite as ‘stellar’.

Best and most fun car I have ever owned. No issues in 1.5 years. I read the reviews before I bought and they were very good.

This just has me convinced I have the infamous Friday afternoon build or I'm just very unlucky. My 3 series was damn near bulletproof, my 2 series never had a motor related problem, but just about everything else.

1. Interior of the doors pop off (towards the upper rear of the door) if you close the door too hard. Already replaced under warranty but it seemed to be worse, now I just pop them back in when they fall out.
2. Exhaust valve electrical connection would simply fall out. Happened twice. So now I just left it unplugged and taped it to the car out of sight.
3. Interior rattles. Dear god. There are so many I don't bother with asking the dealership to attempt the fix. Instead I drive with the windows down or music on. Besides, I can now hear the exhaust better with the windows down.
4. TMPS - this a quarterly battle and honestly the most infuriating. Generally one of the sensors will somehow lose connectivity. Sometimes the car thinks there is 0 PSI in all the tires. Usually results in a sensor being replaced and some other module replaced under warranty.
5. Moonroof leaked water and was fixed. The fixed introduced this crazy creaking noise. To counteract I greased it up liberally with gummi fledge (or whatever that crazy miracle concoction is called).
6. This one is new and arguably the funniest. While driving the driver side window will sometimes roll it self down if you hit a bump. My guess it's the pinch sensor but who knows. This will also randomly happen when you turn the car off. It probably happens once or twice a week so if it continues to be a problem I'll hand it off to my SA, who we've gotten to know each other quite well over the last few years.

With all that said I still like the car and would do it again. The things that really matter to me such as motor, suspension, etc have worked flawlessly.

I’ve popped 3 CP’s and had a coolant hose pop at the return line to the reservoir- other than that no big issues so far

This makes me wonder if you got water into a circuit board and are now getting semi-random issues as things short out. I've seen another post here where somebody found that they had a fairly large quantity of water sloshing around under the panels in the trunk, so perhaps more dealership digging would turn up a better solution?

I wouldn't say mine has been unreliable, but NAV is the only issue that has actually occurred.

And there were 2 separate occurances:

1- About 2 months after purchase my NAV/Computer would randomly start resetting, and then upon boot up would just go into a reset loop for a while. They replaced the entire system for this.

2- Sometime earlier this year the screen went blank and said no connection in red letters. They did a software flash and it seems to have gone away. *knock on wood*

As far as actual issues popping up, I cant say I have had any actual problem with the car malfunctioning so far. Just rattles, which while annoying, I wouldn't count towards being actual faults with the car, as there are a number of factors that can lead to this (such as crappy streets for instance).

Now the car might be prone to some rattles, and when you add in terrible street conditions, those areas tend to be the ones to commonly cause noises.

But overall the dealer has been pretty good in addressing them if I can get them replicated. The problem is they occur only under certain road conditions, and the damn roads by my dealer are much smoother.

I have seriously had times where I was bringing the car in, all the way to the dealer I heard an annoying rattle, once I got there, went for drive with the tech, wouldn't make a peep. Its like the car was like "Nooo nooo i'll be good please don't leave me here"

I had a couple issues with my 2015 228i MSport, track pack. A sensor for the adjust shocks went bad and "locked" the suspension in sport. Clutch pedal has an intermittent click that you can feel but not hear. The electric cooling fan in front of the radiator crapped out and the car needed to be towed to the dealer... not bad in the 2 and a half years I have owned it, but not flawless. Much better than the 2010 GTI I owned before... fun car, but it liked to see the dealer.

I experience this only when I engage auto-up on the window switch just before I go over a hard bump (speed bump or gutter). I attribute that to the jarring motion triggering the sensor. I don't consider this a problem.

My car has 13,000 miles and has been very reliable. The only issue I had was the clicking noise from the front wheels on hard cornering. The dealer did a great job taking care of the issue.

I plan on keeping this car for a long time. These reliability ratings from CR and TrueDelta are very encouraging.

Some interesting nuances you guys have. I've yet to run into any major issues, but I've only had mine for 4 months. I did have a few hiccups here and there, though:
  • I had the window roll down on me twice, but I know one of them was during a bump and the other time, it came down after briefly rolling up upon button trigger.
  • I had a slight pop sometimes when I reverse with the steering wheel turned close to full lock, but that seems to be gone now since spring install.
  • My navi kept cycling back to "enter address" page if the route guidance did not fully finish and you ended it mid-route, but that got fixed when I updated my navi.
  • My brakes squeal ever so slightly when braking softly just before coming to a stop, but it's intermittent and I'm used to race compounds that squeal all the time so this doesn't bother me.

What bothers me more about this car is how thin the body panels are and the ridiculously tiny wheel wells in which you can't fit any decent sized wheels/tires.

Yeah, that I would totally understand. I'll be driving along, windows up, then all of the sudden the driver window goes down. The funny thing is I can't cancel it either. If I push the switch up it stops the window, but soon as I release it'll go all the way down. Once completely in the down position, I can freely move the window back up. Not sure what to make of this one.

when a power window loses calibration. they run it all the way down to recalibrate. i bet that’s what’s going on.

My 2014 M235i was very problematic, so much so that I am scared to keep it after warranty because BMW charges Ferrari prices for parts/labour and there are no good independent mechanics in my neck of the woods.

I had my manual gearbox replaced twice and also got fleeced by the dealer for clutch replacement which wore out way prematurely at 25000km ($4800 dollars).

My 235i had a chatter in the front end when hitting bumps in the road, almost sounded like a loose strut. Took it to BMW and they said both struts need to be replaced. Parts are on their way from Germany now, let?s hope they are right. Only 20k kms on it.

Early clutch replacement is always a bummer. There is no way to prove that the problem was not with your left foot.
But if you have no good BMW-savvy locals, dump the car quick! I have a great, super honest place nearby and they kept my 325 going for a dozen years until the parts costs just overwhelmed us. Could never have done it without them.

Luckily for me, all the issues I have experienced are fixable. However, it's been a PITA and a waste of time and MONEY (most of the issues occurred after the warrantee period) dealing with these issues one after another. I expected modern BMWs to have less of these gremlins.

Oh I forgot, I had to replace a faulty ABS sensor too.

Only 15,000 miles in 2 years and 1 glitch per year:
1) passenger's side seat back plastic bowed out and was replaced
2) driver's side tail light flaked out (warnings for all 4 functions) and was replaced this week.
I'm pretty damned happy with the car.

Considering that BMW dealers charge $150+ per hour, and even simple jobs get charged at 1-2 hours labor min, one should expect to spend at least $500 whenever anything goes wrong if the car is out of warranty.
