The N20 of that vintage is fine. Unless your father plans to tune the car to within a hair's width of its design tolerances, the motor is as reliable as any other BMW has made recently -- particularly after BMW addressed the two flaws it did have when it was first introduced in 2011: that timing chain, and the fuel pump.

If the car was built after January 2015 it should have the updated timing chain parts.

The timing chain was redesigned for the 2015 model year because of its problems. The 2012-14 models had recalls to address this issue along with the fuel pump. My 2015 hasn't missed a beat, though it only has 13K miles on it. My subjective opinion is that it is a wonderful engine. Torquey and powerful with good gas mileage. Go for it.

Unfortunately it's not a recall item.
Since he already has the car I would just get a warranty and not worry about it. It's not like every pre 2015 has failed either |

Not sure about Canada but in the US that is absolutely not the case. The original warranty transfers to the new owner, and the new owner can pay BMW to CPO the car through 75K or 100K any time before that original warranty lapses.

No way to tell how likely it will happen. But from what I have seen IF it does it's a total engine replacement.
That goes for any car really, they are complex machines. |

BTW that 20k number is for a BMW dealer to put a brand new engine in.
You could probably get a used engine for less than 5k plus whatever the labor cost would be at an independent shop. |

2015 N26 here and no problems at all, even with fairly aggressive tuning. It's a great engine.
