Let me start off by saying I realize a lot of folks in here are far more financially capable than I, so this may seem like mere pocket change to some.

Anniversary is coming up for the GF and I. We are going to spend a weekend on the North Shore of MN and see some fall colors. I have the opportunity to rent a '15 GT3 for 3 days for around $1,800. This includes insurance and 650 miles. When comparing prices to other rental places around the country this is a damn good deal, and even though it's through a company that manages rentals, it's a buddies of mine car so that money will go to him (after management fee's, etc)

Am I silly to be considering this? The GF thinks it would be fun, but her eyes also got quite large when I said what it would cost. I can afford the weekend, but I guess the idea of tossing near $2k to rent a car seems, well, out there.

What say you?

I think he has a contract with the company and can't offer it at discounted prices, it all has to go through them. He did get me a little extra mileage, originally 600, and a discount on extra miles of 650. The whole trip without extra driving is only about 480 so theres plenty of extra.

And yes I was thinking the same, temps wouldn't be ideal, but I also wouldn't be driving in a way that I would be worried.

If you're not going to be pushing it, there are many other cars that would make a lot more sense for a fall colors cruise, eg a bentley conti GT convertible, and probably cost less. I'd pay to rent a Gt3 for a track day. Mellow fall cruise? Not at all worth the $ imo

If you don't have any promises in with your buddy, a more luxurious vehicle might be more appreciated with the lady friend as well.

If you just want a flashy car, there are also a lot more eye grabbing cars out there.

Spend that money on something you both will enjoy... that's what matters for an anniversary. Upgrade where you are staying or eat at the best places. So many better options.

Get a luxury car or SUV and be nice and posh for the trip.

As some of you mentioned, I told her we can look at nicer luxury cars or spend some of that money on nicer places instead or even a future trip, but after looking online at them she wants to take the GT3. She says she wants to do something exciting, splurge a little and have fun.

Our last anniversary trip was 3 years ago. Since then I have only been home for about half of that time, and she has been working hard on her business, so she says its time to do something for ourselves. She wanted to go to the North Shore, I wanted the car.

it wouldn't be the ideal car for the situation. but if its a dream car for you then do it.

600 miles will get you plenty of time to get to know the car. GT3s are pretty versatile and you can put tons of luggage up front and in the back. the suspension is firm but not unbearable. the exhaust is valved and stays quiet at low rpms. pdk is the best auto trans in the business. I'm assuming he has the sofa seats and not buckets so that will also make life easier.

would just be cautious of the temps. not sure what tire he's on but if its the factory cup2 they need some heat in them and don't like wet conditions. if he rents it out im assuming he has a more streetable tire on it

Fuck it. Just do it. Road head is a must:-) Enjoy brother. Make sure you bring it back with 649 miles and the tires on fire. That's not a bad price. It is 2015 so not like it's a 2020. It's only money. You can make more. Fuck getting some Grand pop luxury car. That sounds lame to me. You on a vacation!! Live that shit up!!! Or rent a G-80. And really be a baller😂🤣😉

My 2C - If she is not a big car person. Save your $$. Even if she is, save your $$. My father in law has a 22 gt3 manual. It's awesome to drive, but if you plan on having fun and driving enthusiastically to get your money's worth. It's just not as fun for a passenger, let me say that. I have driven and been passenger. It's just not a comfy ride either, not for the passenger for long hauls. It's loud and the suspension is stiff af. Makes my M3 feel like a rolls. Here's my suggestion: Save the $1800, go to a nice dinner there, for a few hundy, then spend 450 - 500 on a track experience. I did one in a ferrari 488 and it's such a sick experience. WAY better than just driving the gt3 on the road. The track experience with a coach is super sick and you will feel much more thrill and feel like you got your money's worth if you do that instead.

Also, for road trips, I pretty much always rent a chitty car for 20 bucks a day and save the mileage/wear on my dailys. Rental cars are so cheap. Especially if you only have gas hogs like me. More impressive is saving $, not spending.

Not the best car to rent for a trip especially if you're doing a lot of city driving but it is an incredible car and a ton of fun if you get any open roads or twisties. I wouldn't want to be a passenger in a GT3 for 3 days personally but it's not the worst ride in the world. If I were you I'd save the $1800 and then take a trip to the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta or LA and do the GT3 experience for $1000. Two plane tickets plus hotel, a $300 spa day for your girl, and $1000 for the experience puts you at about the same price and you get another vacation and your girl doesn't have to lose her teeth rattling around in a track car.

If you really want to drive the GT3 and I get the idea of having the significant other along for the ride then go for it. I do like taking the Bug out for a spin in the country with my wife and going away for a weekend is a great excuse. There are lots of other cars you can rent, but rent the one you want to drive.

Yeah kind of a silly idea, but I think most are fixating on the $1800 number rather than the delta. If it's a given that a car will be rented for the trip, then the true cost of the GT3 will be the difference between $1800 and another alternative. It's not like standard cars are free to rent...
