Higher mileage m240I keep extended warranty or not?

Hey guys, this is my first post in this forum and I'm proud to say this is also my first BMW. I just bought my new (to me) '17 M240I Xdrive last week and so far I couldn't be happier with my purchase. That being said I bought the car with 85,000 miles on it, but despite the mileage the car was extremely clean inside and out and the car fax was clean. Even though the price on the car was right and I immediately fell in love with the experience of driving it at the dealership, I had reservations for obvious reasons about buying a higher mileage cars and a higher mileage BMW at that… this led me to fall into the extended warranty trap. I figured better to be safe than sorry right? The thing is I'm realizing that with the tunability of these cars and the b58 platform it's only a matter of time before I have to scratch the horsepower itch again. Do you guys think I should ditch the warranty and get my money back? Or keep the warranty and play it safe a little bit longer? I'd appreciate any feedback or advice and also pointers on maintenance on a higher mileage f22 car.

Welcome to the club.

As for the warranty it depends on what is covered. It is likely a third party warranty. Will it cover a charge pipe, oil leak at the filter or oil pan? You are probably close to needing shocks. On my CPO I bought the tire and wheel warranty and had the wheels reconditioned two times and 4 tires replaced. Not sure I would do that again. Does the stealership have the maintenance records? That will inform the decision.

Thanks Rich! As far as I know its the one below the gold and and platinum warranties offered by BMW. Power train not bumper to bumper. It's for 36,000 miles as well. As far as maintenance records I asked before I purchased the car and they simply referred to the car fax so probably nothing there… guess I'm just thinking if I'm about to mod the car maybe I should just save the money on warranty and tune away

As for the shocks, are the dampers prone to fail? I figured I'd be getting aftermarket ones in the future anyway.

They won't catastrophically fail like your charge pipe but they do wear out. I ordered a set of Bilstein B6 Performance DampTronic Strut but no one says they have them in stock and delivery is slated for DECEMBER from BimmerWorld. So much for a nice weather install.

Bilstein are nice, I saw one guy on this forum recently who was using Koni yellows. They seem to work well for him. I figured it would be between those or full on coils for me.

water pumps usually go around 60-70k miles on average... the OFHG, Oil pan gasket and Valve cover gasket start leaking around same mileage...

That many issues under 100k? The question is do I wait for these things to break and fix as they go or just do a thorough inspection now? Again maintenance is not covered by the dealership but my extended warranty might come in handy if you're right about having failures on these cars this early

well oil leaks never get better ....

If you have the warranty I would have a dealer do an inspection and specifically ask them to check for the common leaks mentioned before... if they find any then use the warranty...

the OFHG is usually a $1k job alone...

water pump is usually better to replace before it fails cause it will leave you stranded

Makes sense. I'll ask about all of this when I go to the dealership in a few days. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone, this forum so far has certainly proven the stereotypes about bmw owners to be wrong. Very helpful community. I've decided that I'm going to get the vehicle inspected one more time by the dealership nearby and then cancel the extended warranty. I'm just not convinced I'll have any use for it especially since that money can go towards new parts and mods for the car.

Thinking there isn't a difference and actual failure of those parts is not the same. Question is if the m240's have these issues? I haven't seen much postings in that regard. So I'm interested if your post is just an opinion, or based upon fact?

I'm just about 10k (miles) on a 2020, so it's interesting to assume I'm 1/5 of the way through until serious maintenance...

I was thinking the same thing. Although I appreciate the insight, 60-70k miles for a water pump would be severe enough that I think bmw would have done a recall by now… otherwise my car is a ticking time bomb. I'd say he might be inflating it a bit but I'll still pay close attention to it from now on.

Probably cause there are not that many 240's in the 70k miles as other models

My comment is just regarding the pumps which are plug an play on multiple models

It's not that all will fail at 60-70k maybe 20-30%. But for $300 I rather not take a chance and get stranded

You might get to 100k with no issues. Charge pipes blow up all the time on the N55s and BMW never did any recall 🤷🏼*♂️

I haven't heard of people needing to replace the charge pipe on B58s. Mostly because they want something that looks cooler.

I don't think we even have OFH gaskets.. oil pan might leak, same with valve covers and PCV valves could fail.

We have a mechanical belt driven water pump for the engine and electric for the charge air cooler. High Pressure Fuel Pump is on the top and easily accessible.

Vanos and timing chain is on the firewall side and potentially more difficult to get to.

It's a bit more reliable than the N55 but not immune to things going wrong.
