Recommended 6 piston Brake Upgrade?
Hey guys!
New to the forums and just have some questions about some upgrades I'm looking to do to my 2020 BMW m240i xDrive. Took this car out on the track for the first time, and while my car does have the M Performance brakes, I personally found them underwhelming, especially after the long straightaways on the track. I'm curious if anyone has upgraded from the 4 piston front / 2 piston rear M Performance brakes to a 6 piston front / 4 piston back setup what brakes they recommend? Personally I've been looking into the Dinan by Brembo brakes (#D290-0301-R and #D290-0306-R), but not sure if there is anything better out there (or cheaper lol). Thanks in advance! |

I'm running Stoptech 6 piston front 4 piston rear - I bought it from Bimmerworld.

FWIW, there are a number of threads on this site detailing the ways in which our cars' braking systems are not track-ready. It's also challenging to make them track-ready in an absolute sense.

Good track pads and high boiling temp fluid absolutely make the stock M performance brakes track ready (as in no fade and you safely stop all session). Yes, you can do better with an upgrade, but they aren't bad.

Change the pads and fluid, it'll be fine after that.

Even with pads and fluid - they will not stand up to repeated lapping, they are simply too small and lack the thermal mass to be effective on our cars with repeated hard lapping.

Which track did you have issue with on the stock rotors and calipers? My experience has been good with Pagid RSL29s and Motul RBF600 at tracks like Watkins Glen and Summit Point Main which have 130mph to <60mph braking zones. Not saying I could brake as late as the Porsche Caymans, but no fade.

Hi, I've had issues on short courses at NJMP - as the brakes do not get to cool down with repeated lapping, VIR, and at Monticello. It's not that pads and rotors don't solve the problem, but the factory calipers are not designed for repeated hard lapping and hi temps, sure they will work fine for a few sessions. However their durability will be compromised, they discolor, and on a full track day in the summer they will fade - regardless of pad / fluid. The M2 for example comes with larger brakes than our car and is very close in weight and power.

My car's brakes never faded with DTC-70s and Castrol SRF. At Mid-Ohio, a handling course very much like Summit Point Main, the measured temps of the rotors and calipers were very high. The rotor temps exceeded the top of the pads' temperature range, and the caliper temps were very high, too. After six events, the dust boots were cracked. My guess is they'd begun to crack much earlier. I then had the calipers' boots and piston seals replaced. From earlier reports, I knew there would be brake temp issues and I tried to address them ahead of time. There wasn't much to be done without spending a lot of money on better components and finding some means of directing more air into the center of the rotors. That was more than I wanted to take on. This thread details what I had done (tl;dr is post #20): https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1670372. At Mid-Ohio, I ran 2-3 X 8-lap sessions each day, or about 30-45 minutes. If I'd run longer sessions, I think my blue calipers would have turned to pea green like other owners' calipers have. An M2 owner I was in the garage with had calipers that had turned green and said he hadn't had any trouble overheating them to that point. We were running pretty much the same speed going into the fastest and most demanding braking zone (one like T1 at SP Main), and our tires were roughly equal in width and stickiness. He solved his problem with pro-level calipers, rotors, and, best of all, a total of 5" of brake ducting to each front rotor. That solved his problem for good.

I disagree. I changed the pads and the fluid on my M240i for the track. I installed Performance Friction -08 pads front and rear. I flushed the brake fluid with Motul RBF600. I ran as hard as I could around Summit Point and Virginia International Raceway without a hint of fade. One weekend at VIR the instructor had me wait until the 200 foot marker for turn 13 before slamming on the brakes at 120mph. Zero fade! The brakes are made by Brembo. It makes the brakes for Ferrari. |

I know who makes the factory M calipers. Fact is if you continually lap you will cook the brakes. Go run a couple of track days with multiple hours of lapping.
