Do 88 Intercooler

Hello Guys,

I wanted to share my experience with the DO88 performance intercooler for the F series as before ordering i didn't find any review on it.

In mainland europe most performance intercooler for the bmw are either from germany (Wagner tuning) or from the uk that cause an import tax and I often like to take unconventional routes and try different products.

I ordered the intercooler directly from DO88 website it was shipped the next day and it got delivered to my door in Switzerland after 7 days.

Contrary to the wagner tuning intercooler EVO 2 the DO88 is a bar and plate design wich is more ideal for my driving style and area. Plus has a bigger volume than the Evo 2 15.208cm³ vs 13.840cm³ to compensate with the lower efficency of the bar and plate design.

It arrived in a very well (and BIG) packaged box with nice DO88 print outside + two screws, fitting instructions and a couple of DO88 stickers.

Fitting is like all aftermarket intercoolers dough maybe to my lazyness and contrary to the instruction I took the front bumper off the car to make my life easier.

During the upgrade I also replaced the boost pipe to an FTP boostpipe.

I tried my best to do an apple to apple comparison from the stock IC and pulled out a graph from 4 runs done on the same day during the hottest time of the day and just the time to swap the IC between the two runs:

The run was 3 pulls in 4th gear from 60 km/h to 180km/h in rapid succession on the same stretch of road.

Run 1: Stock IC Bootmode stage 1 98 octane
Run 2: Stock IC Bootmode stage 2 98 octane
Run 3: DO88 IC Bootmode stage 1 98 octane
Run 4: DO88 IC Bootmode stage 2 98 octane

After a very sweatty mounting during a hot day I got the car out and the temperature dropped from 32.5 C to 30 C

I tried to attach the datalogs but the file its too big.

For now I'm very happy with my purchase and have seen a nice drop in temps even on long highway pulls and at the track. It seems very robust even against rocks and debris that I often find in my area that ruined a lot of fins on my original intercooler.

Great review.

A few notes - Bar and Plate coolers are MORE efficient than tube and fin, they have more surface area for convection compared to something like the Wagner.

I'm not sure the rules in your country, but we have a few offerings in the USA which would be cheaper than something like some of these intercoolers

Finally the performance seems alright. If I understand correctly, the temps for stage 2 started at 30C (86F) ambient with a high of 47c (116F) and average around 40c (104F)

30F over ambient is quite high, but 20F is about normal for an IC like this. Can you share the BM3 log?

Hello AmuroRay,

Thanks! Yes I think there are some cheaper solutions Stateswise like from VRSF.
I usually see 7°C to 12°C (44,6 to 53.6 °F) above ambient temp in hot days but it's very constant on long pulls.
After seeing and install video I saw that American spec cars have a cut out on the under tray of the car with small winglets.

I did a similar thing with mine but instead of the small winglets i have put a L shaped angular bar. It doesn't see to improve temps but improves aerodynamics quite a lot.

Thank you for the review.

I recommend you share the ignition timing and the boost (target vs actual) on a long pull (2-4)

That's how you can really know how the intercooler is performing

Hello Mike,

Here is what you have advised to add a graph with Boost target and actual and the ignition timing

I have done two pulls in rapid succession from 60 km/h in 3rd gear to 260 in 6th and in 6th from 100 km/h to 250 km/h ambient temperature was 24.5°C

Starting IAT was 33°C and Max was 47 at the end of the first pull.

Boost target vs actual seems on point apart a small over boost in acceleration and a small dip over 6200 RPM

There is a small timing retard of 7.2° on the 6th gear pull as the engine builds RPM's I don't know if that is normal.

Attached is also the .XLS with the raw data
