Does lumber support really necessary?

Hi, I am currently 3 series owner, but I really do like 2 series style. There is a perfect 228 xdrive with everything loaded except the lumber support, (m pkg, harman kardon, and navigation.)
Does lumber necessary or that important?

It's nice but not necessary. Not a deal breaker, for sure.

My opinion is that it is not necessary. The seats are very comfortable and the car is lovely to drive. I can drive 500km with just a fuelstop and not even feel tired in my car.

My car is a 230i, I got it new in april. The only things I did not spec on it is lumbar support, electric seats, tow hook and comfort access.

lumbar support is not a stand-alone option in the US, so I presume that the car you are looking at has manual seats. If you are the only one driving it regularly, then that is not a problem. In my case, two of us are regular drivers, so the memory function of the electric seats is very useful.

No one can answer this question for you. The answers will vary as much as does individual anatomy and perception. There is no one seat design which pleases all, and any particular seat will be liked by some and disliked by others. You will have to test-sit to determine.

I'm confused because you are saying the car is loaded. If it has electric M sport seats, then it should have lumbar support.

If you make frequent long trips (over an hour), I find there's a huge difference in how I feel at the end of it.

I never had lumbar support so I don't miss it. I don't drive long distances in the 228 so no big deal. The sport seats are very comfortable.

If you need lumbar support, there are many after-market options.
My wife has always had issues with her back requiring some kind of lumbar support for cars seats. We now have the lumbar support feature in the M235xi, but in previous vehicles, she had a mesh support pad (pic below) which really worked as well as the current factory option. There are many similar devices and a lot less expensive than the factory option.

Frankly, I would not carry lumber in my 2 series, even though it is a convertible and I could probably get quite a few six foot or longer boards in there. I think it wouldn't be good for the carpet or the seats. I'd be more inclined to use a place that delivers, or borrow a truck from one of my friends.

I never felt the need or desire for lumbar support despite my cars having them. I think you're ok without it unless you've needed it in the past.

I use the shit out of the lumbar support feature in my cars. If you pay attention and get it right while everything else is already in correct position, your body will become that much more supported/suspended by having a little more "hug" in the dip in your lower back. Too much lumbar can be bad though. Have to get it just right to appreciate the benefits. The first thing I did when I picked up my 2er at the Performance Center was go nuts on the seat adjustment. Felt just fine after the 12 hour road trip home.

++1 on the adjustments. As a new owner, I "think" I have it right. But the control button seems very subtle to changes compared to my previous system (non-BMW). I wouldn't worry about it, or if essential, get an add-on that will really make a difference.

Yes it is necessary if you are over 40 and do long distance driving.

A lumbar support can be nice especially if you have lower back "issues". For me (I have said "issues"), it's not deal breaker. Most new cars have reasonably supportive seats w/o a lumbar bladder. If you feel the need for extra lower back support there are some very nice alternatives you can purchase.

One advantage of this aftermarket support is that it provides ventilation which, I would imagine, would be desirable in warm to hot weather. Do you have a link for that mesh lumbar support? Thanks.

Since you're stateside, you can buy them from your local AAA office.

Thanks. They're easier to find on Amazon however. AAA's site for our area doesn't seem to offer them.

You can get a couple 2 x 4's for your lumber support

I would not say it’s critical, but we own a total of five cars… Three with it (including the M235), and two without it. Whenever I use one of the cars without it for more than 30 minutes I really start to miss it. The ability to keep adjusting it keeps my lower back from starting to get stiff.

Lumbar support is a separate feature that required that you buy the whole tech package to get (in 2016, probably still that way) so you can get electric power seats w/o it. I suspect that with Nav you would get this feature, so look for the switches down on the seat controls (salesmen are often clueless, don't trust them if they say it doesn't have it).

I don't have it, am over 40, and have back problems; and I haven't had problems even on a 950-mile 2-day slog. But everybody's back issues are unique, and you would want to trial this. Most people who absolutely need this will have a custom cushion already. My wife could not find a setting that would NOT jack up her back, so for some it may be totally wasted (but this was during test drive phase, more time might have found a good spot).

And FWIW, I'd kill for ventilated seats (and a 16+ gallon gas tank). Working on a home mod over the winter for the venting, but that AAA gizmo looks interesting.
