Coolant usage 2017 M240
Has anybody experienced coolant usage with your M240 (B 58 engine)? I recently drove 1400 averaging 71 mph and had to add coolant to both reseviors. This is not the first time that I've had to add coolant and not due to sustained highway speed driving. Vehicle has about 11k miles on it.

Is this supposed to be an issue? For the first time this morning (im at 3800 miles), i got a low coolant warning. Never have i had to add coolant to my cars really. Especially on a new car with 3600 miles. I work at the dealer so no biggie, but still very odd.

When I’ve had to add coolant to my BMWs, it has always been in cold winter weather. So, perhaps due to some evaporation?

My dealer allegedly filled mine 2 months ago
on Friday the low coolant came on, took it back and they claimed to refill it again - I foolishly didn't check if they actually had Yesterday morning the light came on again, I checked the main reservoir and its almost empty (the 2nd one is full however) Either there's an issue with this engine, or my dealership are liars and didn't actually fill me up. It's been about 50 degrees for the last few days and my car never left a heated garage so this is concerning |

After a month or so of ownership at 2,000km when I checked the coolant levels, the main cooling system was 0.4L low, the intercooler reservoir 0.1L low. Now approaching 10,000km and having checked the coolant levels several times there hasn't been any more change in the levels.

Low coolant came on this past cold spell (we're talking over a week where we had highs at or below zero F) - I've had the car for 7 months, zero service under the hood since delivery. Dropped by the nearest Toronto dealership - they topped it up - 0.2 l (less than a cup for you US folks). Visually the level was just below the minimum mark in the overflow tank. I think the warning level is very sensitive, and it was no big deal.

Mine was completely empty after 8000 miles on bigger tank. Small tank was good.
FYI, coolant should never be evaporated under normal circumstance. Cap is typically air tight up to 10~15 psig and even when the engine runs real hot in hot day, coolant pressure at the tank should not go over 15 psig. If you need to fill up more than few times, then I would check with dealer before the warranty ends. big tank is for main cooling circuit. (engine, turbo, oil cooler..etc). It is high temperature cooling circuit. (over 200 F) Small tank is for low temperature cooling circuit which include intercooler and air conditioner condenser. (typically 10~20F above ambient temperature) If it is big tank, you would suspect leak on the engine/turbo. (at least B58 is closed deck. so there is no leaking into cylinder. lol) If it is small tank, it can be intercooler (which will be nightmare). Again, BMW factory fill doesn't seems very reliable. so it is highly likely improper fill. Just need to keep an eye on it. |

There have been reported instances on the B58 of coolant leaks inside the turbo where the coolant gets burned up. The repair is a turbo replacement. On this forum and the F3X forum, you'll see many posting about coolant losses on the B58. It's a bit alarming, IMO.

Some argue it's legit. Personally, I think it's a red flag. I would send for for an oil analysis. That will reveal it all.

From what I could gather, the general gist of things was that the factory (or dealer prep) often doesn't fully fill the engine, which is very convoluted and needs vacuume fill or similar. So after a while, the air bubbles work out, and you need to top off ONCE. Pretty much every other type of ongoing loss is linked to something ranging from expensive to 'Don't Ask' (leaking hoses, sucked thru turbo or intercooler, or bad head gasket are most common?). I'd say that if you have an ongoing issue that the dealership keeps playing off, you would do well to have some of the fluid analyzed privately, to be sure you aren't seeing signs of oil/water contamination that would be a head gasket (start w/ your oil - I think water in the oil is worse than oil in the coolant). It does sound like it would be very easy to have a dealership get lazy and not refill properly, though, so always a chance it is really not a big deal.

With just over 400 miles on my new M240i, the low-coolant warning light came on today. The service department found that both coolant systems were low (one of them by about 1.5 cups).

I have a 2016 M235i (N55); coolant alert @ 6k miles, it was down slightly and dealer topped. Real problem now is an unknown random trigger to the coolant alert, with coolant levels fine. Dealer has replaced tank, pressure tested, reset sensors, etc. and alert has come on multiple times, every thousand or so miles. I'm @ 21875 and the dealer has had my car on and off for a month. Love driving the car, hate this persistent issue.
