Black Hood Insulator removal?

Does anyone know if there any implications for removing this insulator under the hood? I noticed all the M cars don't have it, but non-M cars do. I want to remove it to hear a little more engine upfront, but don't want to remove it if there will be any issues. I could be wrong, but I believe BMW added these to the non-M cars to reduce cabin noise.

Appreciate any input!

if you want to hear a bit more engine just remove the engine cover

I'd prefer to keep the engine cover on. I was mainly worried about the paint on the hood.

I would definitely recommend the same, the engine cover unsurprisingly traps more heat than the insulation from what I've seen.

Just removed my monday, pops out with clips, to clean compartment. Need to be careful with Xcross metal pieces underneath, if they get too hot, they can warp and pull down on hood, creating small warp indentation in hood. (this was from body shop and I confirmed with a BMW service guy.)

Exhaust/downpipe replaced ? Hear more growl there

I removed mine over a year ago. I also removed the engine cover and made a custom cover using a single valve cover from a E39 5 series to cover the coil packs, injectors, and exposed wiring.

I removed the hood insulation and heavily insulated big engine cover to reduce under hood heat entrapment in hopes of reducing degradation of various gaskets, hoses, fittings, plastics, and wiring, especially within the cylinder head area.

As noted earlier, the M2/3/4 cars don't come with the hood insulation so there really is not risk to the hood paint. Also, the S55 equipped M2/3/4 have a very very tiny engine cover that only covers the front half of valve cover. The primary purpose of the heavily insulated engine cover on the N55 is to speed the engine warm up process, both on cold start and short drives. This improves efficiency but the downside is it locks in heat, which over time, degrades components. The cover also reduces injector noise to some extent.

I notice a little more mechanical noise with all these insulating components removed under heavy acceleration. At all other times, I notice no real perceivable difference in sound.

Good points jets, but the Xcross is different on 2 series, I believe. Don't think paint is risk, but BMW service rep noted the warp of the cross metal and slight indentations.

Just one guys/reps thought

(M2 doesnt have one I think, but the compartment is different and the Xcross is not there. concave yes ? )

Anyways, not a big deal but consideration when pulling

Not sure what you mean by "Xcross", but the M2 and all 2 series share the same hoods. On the M2s, you can see to holes for where you can mount the hood insulation clips and some M2 owners have installed the hood insulation.

Maybe the newer ones, but if you pull the 2016 235i (or 228) there are rigid cross metal beams where M2 has neither. (beams but they are flat medal crossed, every 235i I looked at had)

https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1386255

Those cross beams are attached to the metal hood, and under extreme heat will warp and pull down and create a small indentation in the hood.

The BMW service rep showed me a 2017 M2 vs my 2016 235i. Maybe its changed since 2017, but even the parts (see above thread) are different.

I'll try and post pics later of both at the dealer when I get home.

OP - if concerned chat with BMW folks

BMW N55 M2's have the same exact hood including the glued on frame supports in the middle underside of the hood. They have have the same predrilled holes. See this photo of the underside of a N55 M2 hood, nothing is different compared to a normal 2 Series:
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1&postcount=68

Also, a simple search of realOEM shows that all 2 series cars, except for the M2 Competition, use the same hood: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/par...&q=41007373899

There are no concerns with warpage. I live in an area that routinely sees 90-105 degree summers. I haven't have any issues and why should I? It's the same hood as the N55 M2

The M2 Competition has the same glued on underside frame, but there is a slight change in the very back of the frame to clear the water/air top mount intercooler/intake manifold.

I have removed the insulator. I notice a slight increase in cabin noise and can hear more of the Dinan CAI

^^

Do you think that under hood stamping design is for pedestrian impact protection ?

I think the plastic engine cover are also utilized so skulls don’t impact the top of the engine

Nope. The S55 motor in the M2 Competition has the same hood and hardly any engine cover.

Any recommended way to get the clips off without breaking them? Can't seem to pry them off with fingers or sharp pliers.
Any specific tool that was you used?

Thanks for that - I do have a set of basic plastic trim removal tools, so will give them a try.
