Figured I'd chime in on this thread as well. Dropped my '14 M235i to get checked out for 2nd gear grinding. Dealer called about 3 hours later and said they ordered a whole new transmission for it. Swapping it out next week. Car has just over 20k miles.

The grinding seems to happen mostly when the car is not fully warmed up, <5 min into the drive. It's quite annoying as it almost happens daily now, even in summer.
I will get them to replace the transmission after the problem becomes worse to the point of unbearable.

Is grinding only apparent when shifting hard between 1-2? Doing 1st gear pulls?

Mine is actually worse the longer I drive it. Shifting quickly from 1-2 anywhere above 5k rpms requires a good 2 second delay on shifting to not grind. A higher rpm 2-1 shift even rev matched will usually grind as well.

Why would one do a high rpm downshift from 2-1?? Most cars will lock you out of first while moving a certain speed for a reason.

So I am reviving this old thread in light of this most recent thread http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1501371 to give those who previously contributed an opportunity to provide update(s) and to ask a question or two of the group. I hate to say I too have had this happen to me about 5 or 6 times in the 18 months / 24K miles I have had my M235i. I am more careful now to avoid this but my concern is should I be very worried about this? Have I caused any damage? Should I pay to have my gearbox oil/fluid changed sooner than later? Other than these very few instances in which I have shifted quickly and heard the brief grind (generally at 4-5K rpm) my shifts have been and are butter smooth. I plan to keep my car for at least 6 years / 100K miles and once I sell it and move onto my next vehicle, I'd like to deliver a still solid car to the new owner. Thoughts or comments please?

Let me update this thread as well. My car is 2016 year, about 40,000 km now. The second gear grinds and pops out of itself on daily basis. Usually from a downshift. This problem got worse and worse from 20,000 km on wards.
It started with just a grind from first to second gear change on high RPM, now it would also pop out of gear from a high RPM downshift.

I would downshift to second gear from higher gear with a rev match to 4-5k RPM, it would stay in gear for few seconds, the gear lever would then make a slight pop sound and pop out partially out of gear. Making a very loud grinding noise, requiring to clutch in and shift again into second gear for a firmer gear switch.

I hope it breaks completely soon so I can get a new transmission. I lost all faith in BMW manual transmission

After BMW replaced my second transmission (and I was ripped off $4800 for a new clutch & flywheel) I simply stopped driving my iM235 like a sports car it was advertised: now I downshift at lower RPMs, wait for the revs to drop between 1st and 2nd shifts, hardly ever use first gear etc:

From my personal experience BMW transmissions & clutches are not designed for longevity and robustness, but to be replaced frequently while you're getting gouged paying Ferrari-like prices for parts & labour.

I have a 2014 535i and I'm getting a new transmission also for the 2nd gear grind/crunch at high rpm...it didn't do it before... we will see thank you

I bet BMW is going after the transmission manufacturer, likely ZF.

I just took my 2014 M235i in to BMW of Dallas... was having extreme notchiness and grinding mainly downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. Sometimes a downshift wouldn't grind, but it wouldn't go into gear without putting a lot of extra pressure on the shifter. Classic BMW couldn't repro the issue, so I took it to BMW of Dallas and they are in the process of replacing my transmission. Car has 75k on it, but I have a 7yr/100k extended warranty on it. Win!

I'm wondering if the people who had these issues start appearing had short throw clutch stops installed? Could be a possible factor.

Personally my car is bone stock, and I intend to keep it that way.

I’ve owned 5 bimmers, all with a manual transmission. Bimmer #4, a 2001 330Ci, needed the transmission to warm up before it would shift smoothly from 1st to 2nd. My 2018 M240i is the same way. Both transmissions are made by ZF. My 1985 325e (a tank) never had this issue and the transmission was made by Getrag. So, I think this is endemic to ZF transmissions.

I thought this was an interesting recommendation from the owners manual even though it isn't specific to manual transmission cars.

Sorry it's sideways
