M235 vs '13 Camaro SS 1le?
So a guy at work just picked up a '13 Camaro SS 1le and been carrying on. Since I have the spunkiest ride in the parking lot since the 135i he is wanting to go at it. I am not into the Fast n Furious stuff but he has been riding me. I just installed the Stage 1 piggy back but the Camaro stock has 426hp, MT and track package....just say'n

yea it looks kind of piggish, wide bulky but sounds beastly...but with that kind of umph and track suspension I know it can get. Prolly more M3/4 dept but man it did not cost that much

This.
The Camaro is a pig but it's no joke. It's fast AND it handles and stops. I was at a track event yesterday and there were several Camaros there including a new Z28 and a couple of tricked out SS's. They are track monsters. The carbon ceramic rotors on the Z28 looked as big as the wheels and the calipers were humongous. They sound awesome too. The M235i is awesome, but it's not in the same performance league as a 1LE, SS or Z28. I'm sure it will out perform a V6 Camaro though. |

Both cars have a lot of low end torque and RWD, so I'd say this is a driver's race assuming neither of you head to the drag strip every Sunday. Practice your launch and give him a go.
EDIT: I find most clowns driving big V8 cars have no idea how to put the power down consistently. My little M235xi is a beast out of the hole - and the race is won or lost right there. |

If you had jb4 with just a few gallons of e85 you might beat him easily.. With stage 1 I am guessing he will beat you depending on if he knows how to put the power to the ground like mentioned above

Forget it... the SS 1LE is a whole different animal than an SS. When talking about track performance, the 235 can't match the 1LE in any category that it needs to. Be it acceleration, braking, cornering grip, shock control - the 1LE does every one of them better than the 235i. It's a mismatch.

Randy Pobst drove an M4 at Willow Springs and did a 1:23.73 lap. In the 1LE, he beat that time by over a full second, 1:22.70. The 1LE is a track monster. You'd have to modify an M4 to have a chance. Forget about an M235i. Not happening. PS - Randy drove a stock M235i at Willow Springs as well. The lap was 1:26.37. The M235i and 1LE are leagues apart.

It is an uneven match. Maybe the reason this guy is hedging you to do it. He knows. Just remember, "There is no replacement for displacement."

I promise you, I owned a fully modified 335 before this car and have been around the BMW community plenty long and also check out my other threads that I also do flash tuning for n54 owners.. These cars modded are alot faster than you think. Lets also not forget the weight difference between the two cars and the fact your statistics provided are around a track not in a straight line.
Edit: And yes my 335 was n54 but incase you havn't seen recently a stage 2 n55 135 dynoed at almost 500whp which would rip that camaro a new ass. |

Your argument is all hypothetical, assuming the OP turns his car into a race car. My argument against that would be, what if the 1LE owner pops in a supercharger - then what?

i think he means stock for stock...
a farm truck with a big enough motor will beat a ferrari too.... It's just a matter of how much money you want to throw at it.... |

Absolutely I couldn't agree more, but OP has a stage 1 tune already so its not stock for stock.. And I simply suggested that with a stage 2 he would most likely beat it easy which is true. It definitely always comes down to who wants to throw more money at it.

We're talking about two Average Joes in cars that are close enough in performance that it takes pro's from the mags to tease out the difference between the cars. Not magazine times.
You think just because Motortrend did 13.0 in the 1/4 in the M235i that you could too whenever you wanted? Puleaze. Big difference between magazine times and what Joe Schmoe is gonna do on the street. |
