718 Cayman. I've thought about it lots. I could afford it, but it is not so practical for our winters here. Needing a second vehicle for winter makes it less affordable, and I would not want to pay for a P-car and have it sit for half the year either.

But if you live somewhere more temperate, you do owe yourself a trip to the local Porsche dealership.

I was just reading an article about the availability of lightly used, late-model 718s for well under $50K. If I were looking for another car, one of these would be at the top of my list.

In the UK a 718, similar year and mileage to my 240i is around £36k, an M240i around £20k! Added to that the 718 has 2 seats and not 4 as well as a 150lt boot?

Probably a better sports car, but it doesn't tick all the boxes that I would need ticking right now!

For the price, I just don't think there is a car that ticks the boxes the M240i ticks, which is odd because a year ago I was about to go for an M140i!

Honestly, from a pure driving fun perspective, I could go for an ND Miata. I had an old NA Miata before my 2 series, and that was the most fun car I've ever owned.

When I was shopping, it was Audi S3, JCW Mini, Golf R, Veloster N, Miata. I was patient enough to score this manual M240i for the same price range. Everything else is so bloated and unnecessary.

Not to mention I was already in a E90 so the brand familiarity, forum, realoem was a big bonus. Not too eager to learn a new ecosystem for a car.

Yeah the Cayman is way more pricey, it is a Porsche. The OP already mentioned he had the budget for it in another thread.

And agreed if you need the extra seats or space a pure 2-seater is not for you. I downsized from a line of 3s to the 2 because I don't need as much space anymore. I could downsize some more, but that is just me.

Before I bought my M240, the other car I considered was an AMG A35 hatchback. If they sold the M140 here I would have seriously considered that as well.

No two seater...just to small all around. I am sure a Porche is fun but closest dealer or independent mech is over 70 miles away. M240 is best for now. If I go to a daily driver I will go to M340 ?

No 2 seater either ....... I need some decent cargo space but never have more than one passenger. For me, the 240 is the ideal car size. I don't think we will ever see something similar anymore.

A few years ago, Alfa Romeo was thinking to bring a 4 seat Coupe based on the Giulia sedan but I believe it was just rumors.

I have an M235i Convertible. So if I was to replace the M235i for a similar type of car, I’m not sure what it would be. There not being a 2 Series ‘vert version any more, the BMW candidate would be either a Z4 (only 2 seats) or an M4 (expensive). But for the price, I don’t think that BMW make anything like the M235i/M240i convertible any more - they’ve effectively dropped out of the segment it represents.

For a coupé M2xxi owner, the only similar car is the M2. And for me, unless you’re tracking the car, or spend a lot of time on well-surfaced, twisty roads, I’m not sure it’s worth the premium. And the compromise on the ride for driving to the shops or in urban traffic. But I’m sure it’s right for some people.

In all honesty, if the BMW wasn’t a convertible, we’d have ditched it by now. Our 2nd car is an EV - a Peugeot e208 small hatchback. The EV is simply more responsive than the ‘vert; has linear power at any speed; no throttle lag at all; no gear changes; no visits to the petrol station; maintenance cost almost nothing; and no preventive work like oil changes for for the engine, auto box or LSD; and effectively zero fuel costs as I can charge at home on ridiculously cheap overnight rates. And it cost 40% less than an M240i. Downside is it hasn’t the refuelling range of the petrol car (~130 vs ~300 miles) but our use profile means this isn’t an issue for us (though it won’t be right for everyone).

So for me, the replacement for the M235i ‘vert would be something like the MG Cyberster (attached): 0-60 in 3.2 seconds (if that’s your thing); similar price to a Z4 M40i; and all the plus (and minus) points of an EV.

If I had the M240i coupé, I’m not sure I wouldn’t just hang on to it indefinitely, or at least until it gets to the big 60K mile point where you have to make decisions about more expensive preventive maintenance.

Never owned anything yet that wasn't a coupe/2-seater; don't need the extra space. Something small and nimble but with at least some room for tuning would be ideal.

I have been shopping for a DD replacement for a year and a half, but did not expect much on a trade, and this car has been wonderful, so I bought a used ‘22 Corvette HTC when the prices dropped and kept the M240i. I have 50k miles on it, so a lot of life left and the car runs smoothly with a stage 1 tune and some other performance mods. When it’s time to sell, I might get a 3 series for the 4 doors or an x3 M40i with a trailer hitch. I have a Honda Ridgeline for hauling toys and other stuff, but being able to tow with my DD would be really convenient.

I had x3 with trailer hitch nice but not a fun drive. Thinking of keeping the M240 and getting a Ridgeline for DD ? You happy with ridgeline for DD ?

Hi. The Ridgeline is a great truck (even though some people beg to differ of the class of vehicle it falls into) and I like it better than the 3 Ram 1500’a I owned before it. As far as a DD, it doesn’t have enough power for my tastes and not exactly “fun” to drive, which is why I use my M240i as my DD. My M240i is lightly modded and pushing about 420 HP/TQ at the crank and makes my morning commute nicely caffinated. I was thinking of the X3 M40i as being a reasonable sub for the M240i, but I keep reading about the uncomfortable seats. I’ve driven the M240i from NJ to FL in a day and didn’t feel worn out from the drive. It’s a keeper. Now, if Honda stuck another 150 HP into the Ridgeline, that might be something I could live with as a DD. I’d get the Ranger Raptor to replace it, but I doubt that truck has the level of utility that the Ridgeline does.

I ordered my 2016 M235 6MT back in October 2015. The car has been amazing and I've enjoyed all the mods I've done to it. The car is just the perfect size, plenty roomy even taking 3 other people on a sub 1 hour trip. I have rarely needed more room than the car offers and my kids (15 and 19 now) grew up in that thing. The N55 is a jewel and generally easy and cheap to work on....for a German car.

My other car is a base model 2011 Cayman 6MT which I've had for 1.5 years. I drive that car way more than the M235 because it is so much more fun to drive. Slower? Oh yeah, but I don't care at all. It does everything so damn good. Even though it only has 265hp/220tq, it's surprisingly quick from 0-90mph.

When I replace my M235, which will be within the year, the replacement will either be a used 2016-2018 M2 DCT or a 2024 F150 5.0 single cab/short bed. I absolutely love the 1st gen 2 series chassis and the M2 is just perfect in my book. It addresses the slight discountedness of the M235/M240 suspension, has a proper suspension, an N55 designed for track use, and looks sexy. The F150 is a total odd ball in comparison, but it's a rocket for a truck, can seat 3 if needed, and do truck things. Both the used M2 and F150 are priced similarly (mid-upper 30s).

I got x3 m40 and it is nice but not sporty like a m240. It is a nice suv.
So went back to the f22.
Honda ridge line is a DD that doesn't need to be fun. I Will keep the m240 for that.

That’s good to know about the X3. I’ll probably keep the M240 for a while. Prior to that I had a Durango SRT, Audi RS5, Boxster S and Audi TTRS. The M240 is so good that I don’t miss any of those vehicles. The Durango is a big gas sucking SUV, the RS5 was too heavy, and the flat 6 Boxster didn’t have enough power for me. The TTRS was fantastic, but the transmission kept blowing up on me after I modified it. The M240 takes a flogging day after day without problem and without complaint. If you do get the Ridgeline, and if you like music, get one of the trims with the upgraded sound system. It’s better than the Harmon Kardon system in the BMW. I know that’s not a high bar for audiophiles, but it is worth noting.

Her 2020 M240i fit the bill perfectly
with virtually no other new car options.

Now there is nothing on the market
that fits the bill.

At this late date, there aren't too many women on the market who perfectly fit the manual transmission-loving bill either!

My wife has always spec'd manual transmission cars. They're what she grew up with, and I suppose she simply never saw a reason to change. We've never discussed it - they're just what we buy except when they're unavailable. In our case, those were a pair of Tundras and a 5 Series while living overseas.
