Does anyone else HATE the popping/backfiring (especially with aftermarket exhaust)? I'm talking about the popping/crackling/backfiring sound that you hear especially when letting off the gas during a rev. I've noticed a lot of people like it.

Personally I can't stand this but not sure what the cause is or how it could be avoided (other than not upgrading the DP or exhaust).

For example:

This 335i borla exhaust does not snap/crackle/pop when letting off the gas post rev.

These stock m235i exhausts seems to do it too.

This seems to get worse after people upgrade the exhaust or downpipe on our cars. Is this just a function of the design of the m235i exhaust or is there something else I am missing.

If you stay in comfort mode the pops should be minimal

I believe it can be coded out if it bothers you.

Nope.

It is the sound of the rapidly condensing exhaust gasses cooling in the exhaust line.

Most people enjoy the sound because it's very sporty and aggressive.

My f-type v8 supercharged Jag had the best sounding stock exhaust system I have ever heard. Especially when driving through NYC and getting people turning around to look.

<- not my car but same stock exhaust and you can get an idea.

Interesting since Ive heard that the "overrun" feature can be coded out to eliminate the "burbling & fart" sounds. However I don't know of anyone personally that's actually had it done.

Yup. It's overrun. A lot of Evo guys tune it so that it shoots out flames.

It's not simply turned off or coded off, you have to change many parameters which may effect fuel consumption, engine temperatures and other things.

Here is a thread to read:

I agree. I personally love the pops. I have a muffler delete as well and the sound is unreal. However, if you put the car in comfort or Eco, you can basically eliminate the pops if you don't want to be as loud.

Right, seems as though ESS has developed a flash in order to remove it. My verbiage was off when I said "code" off.

Honestly I initially thought the 1st post suggesting it could be "coded out" was someone just razzing me..... haha. Interesting. It sounds like part of an anti-lag system then maybe?

In that case I'm ok with it. It could be the poor quality recordings or my laptop speakers that make me not like it as much. Noticed it today while revving my car (post intake and JB4 install) and it sounded kinda cool. That Jag post sounds cool for sure.

Well the pops are intentional on the sports models. Its done by software dumping fuel off throttle with no ignition in cylinder. Just a little bit in order to increased the perceived performance of the engine in an era of turbocharging, high efficiency engines, catalytic converters, improved mufflers, etc.

They are just trying to emulate a lost age of performance vehicles in order to sell the cars to people who think that's what they should sound like.

Despite cars being faster, safer, and more powerful than ever there is definite resistance in the market to change.

I agree also, love the sounds emanating from my car! I have an AA exhaust and DSC off just crackles! I've also found that running around town in Eco gives me lots of overrun...must be the tune.

If that's your garage - I hate you with envy.

That F Type is probably the sexiest car on the market and I would have purchased an F Type S if they didn't lease so bad.

GAWD that thing is SEXYYYYYY

I had a Range Rover Sport GT and the Ftype.

I got rid of both, now I just have the m235xi dinan and a 535 cobb tuned.

The jag was a v8, and I got it in the winter a few years ago for only $700 a month.
It was a convertible and you couldn't even fit a 2 basketballs in the trunk.

It was a great car for being RWD, but it wasn't practical at all. Couldn't use it in the rain or the snow. And it drank gas like crazy.

The exhaust tho... the sound of kings. I got that after i lost my 514whp e90 335 in Hurricane Sandy. That was a fast bmw, had all the bolt ons, meth, stacked cobb and the jb+.

Practicality is overrated...the car is simply stunning. Kudos to you good sir.

I wanted an F Type S, no options except the Sports Exhaust.

I must have watched this video 70 times:

Funny thing is we have many customers seeking and looking for more pops and gurgles out of their exhaust systems. I do personally like a smooth sound but there was a time when the pop and gurgles was fun too.
