Characterization of tire traction - Extensive theory and some empirical testing
This is a good article that explains the various types of friction mechanisms at play when looking at tire traction. Takes out driver skill, sample bias etc when considering tire traction.

I think you may win the award for densest and most empirical posting. I haven't fully digested it by any means, but it does start to address some long term Q's I'd had about real-world tire performance, vs. my (now ancient) physics class discussions of cF that were based on blocks of stuff being dragged slowly across desks. Were you inspired by the dude who kept arguing for all-seasons being safer in winter?
