DIY: Cabin Air Filter

Found this guide from Mann if you are interested in changing out your cabin air filter. Looks like a piece of cake...

Thanks. I'll save that link. I might want to change mine before BMW does it for "free".

Why they make it so difficult....In Lexus you dont need any tools, its automatic "door" in glovebox that opens with a press of a button and you take the filter out

How big is the lexus in comparison to the 2 series? The 2 series is on the small side and you have a 3.0L turbo in there. They could have put the cabin air filter in there but it would probably make working on the engine even more difficult. The DIY for this looks like it take 10 minutes tops. Much easier than my moms E60 and my previous audi fwiw. I've worked on turbocharged engines that are really crammed in there (B5 S4, 944 Turbo) and it is such a pain to work on, im happy that they did it this way.

MANN CUK 25001 or bmw part # 64 11 9 237 555 for my m235 '15 for example.
I went with a MANN filter as I replace them myself, diligently.

Replaced Mine But Different

My 2015 did not have the setup as listed in the Mann Filter "How-To".
.
How I replaced.

1. Removed the (2) 10mm nuts found under the glove box.

2. Removed plastic cover with a plastic tool by prying off the cover and
unsnapping the (2) clips as seen in the photo.

3. With access to the filter housing , I removed the (2) #20 torx screws and unclipped the side and middle clip and removed the cover.

4. The cabin filter sits vertical and slides out the bottom - As seen in photo.

Great link, thanks. I'd been told 'it takes tools, buried up in the dash, need dealer to do it'. Obviously not entirely true, looks pretty simple.

And a trick I've learned to help prevent the moldy smell is to try to remember when running AC to just run plain air for the last 5 min or so of the trip. This helps dry out the condenser so there is less to grow on. They also say you can spray up in there w/ Lysol (or some hyper-expensive special cleaning spray) but I've never been that daring.

And the arrow on the filter goes to the front of the car as in towards the engine compartment.

I change mine when the clocks change. Twice a year. Keeps the A/C working nicely and is good insurance from errant smells.

Takes about 10 minutes once you've done it before.
