tuning help

I have a 2015 m235i 6spd. I'm trying to get some pop out of my exhaust. I was recently told by a shop that I absolutely need a catless downpipe and a stage 2 tune. I live in California. I need the cat. am I right to assume that if I do the tune I will in turn get the sound I want? currently I have no resonator and an m2 muffler attached. I will be purchasing a dinan catback soon.

full disclosure I'm trying to convert mine into a Dinan M235i

you can get more pops out by going with a muffler bypass with the resonator delete it will give a lot of pops and backfires. now yes a catless downpipe and tune (preferably a Burble tune so you get maximum pops) will increase them dramatically and change how loud cold starts are. you can go with a high flow sport cart so you still have a cat and no check engine light. now if you are going to convert into a Dinan personally i would go catless and a burble tune for aggressive pops. my only concern would be the exhaust law but if you dont care then thats what id do.

"Burble" (pops and crackles) come in two forms for these cars.

One is physically based on the changes in exhaust gas velocity
when using aftermarket exhaust components, and the other is
based on adding a calibration strategy for enhanced "throttle
overrun" thru your ECU software.

The first is a bit more inconsistent and random, while the second
is very much consistent and predictable. When you venture into
Stage TWO hardware configurations (with downpipes, etc...)
you end up with a combination of the two .

The video below is from the N55 with a completely stock/factory
exhaust system, and our HEX Tuning Stage ONE ECU software.

As you can see, the aggressiveness and duration changes subtly
with the various drive modes. This gives you options for sound
control, while obviously benefiting from MORE power in every
setting, which is typically the primary benefit of tuning.
