Did I miss something? How would a tune change rpm at a given speed - or speed at a given rpm? Was there a gearing change done?
yeah...I'm with ya. pretty confident that gearing is mechanical...

Yet when you throw the shifter to the left it adjusts the gearing for Sport mode, shortening the ratios and (I believe) eliminating 7th and 8th gear. I admit I was mistaken in attributing gearing enhancements to a tune but would you describe the above as mechanical or electronic? Or both?

Gearing vs rpm vs road speed is fixed in all cars. If your car does 100mph at 4000rpm in 6th gear, there's no tune or button in the world that will change that. The only thing that happens when you hit the sport button is that the TCU will hold a gear longer before up shifting. It changes when the car shifts, and that's all.
