Liqui Moly Special Tec LL 5w-30
All -
I just took my car out of storage and decided to try some Liqui Moly product in my 235i. I usually run the bmw branded pennzoil 5w-30 but figured why not as my shop swears by the products (potential conflict of interest aside). So far so good and their technical spec sheets look promising in comparison. I've also seen quite a few favorable reviews about their products but doesn't seem like many forum members run it here. Anyone have any feedback? Cheers |

PP EURO 5W-30 and 5W-40
I just don't see any LM oil as a superior product over the BMW oil particularly in comparison to PP EURO 5W-40 in 70F +.
. . I run the 5W-30 in winter and 5W-40 in summer and have a hard time justifying not simply going the Wallmart and getting Castrol Edge 0W-40. . If it were not for the Low 6% NOACK range of the GTL oil I would get the PAO Castrol. . . LM over on bobistheoilguy is not really seen as a go to oil. |

nice, thanks for the feedback. I'll monitor my gauges to see how it manages heat and pressure. I did notice that the BMW PP seemed to run a bit high for my liking.

LM uses a base stock grade 4, while the stuff from the dealer is grade 3 base stock. The difference: grade 3 is hydrocracked Dino oil while grade 4 is synthetic from the get go. I’m running LM 5W-30 in my M240i. Tracked him at VIR last weekend with no issues.

Nice find! I'm liking the product so far. Can't tell if it runs better or stable until it starts getting hot out but so far so good. I didn't know their fuel was that much better quality. I also don't really understand how fuel quality affects oil OCI either.

FYI i just did the transmission fluid and filter in my 235. I used Liquid Moly's Top Tec ATF 1800 fluid.

BaseStock VS Final Product Performance
Quote:
In the past the basestock was a good indicator of the final products performance. Looking at the total package is now preferred because things like GTL is a game changer. . Although - I hear what you are saying -- Grp 4 & 5 are awesome. |

Now, gasoline in the USA is not ulta-low sulphur gasoline. But, our diesel is ulta-low sulphur diesel. So, using a BMW LL04 oil in a gasoline fired BMW in the USA requires shorter OCI as it's not designed to handle the sulphur-based by-products. |

I contacted the EPA about ultra-low sulphur gas as I’m concerned about using an LL04 oil in the US. According to the EPA, refiners will be required to produce only ultra-low sulphur gas starting January 2020. So if you’re thinking about running an LL04 oil wait until February or March so the sulphur gas can be diluted with the ultra-low sulphur gas.
