M240i Winter Setup 17 inch?
Hey All,
I've been going through the forums but I can't see to find a conclusive answer. I'm hoping someone can shed some light. I have a 2018 M240i with the M Performance brakes and staggered fit Michelin PSS (stock). I'm trying to sort out the winter setup. I've read 17 inch rims would be ideal but I'm concerned about the brake clearance. I checked TireRack and they are suggesting 225/45R17 tires. Could any 17 inch rim work or should I get 18 inch rims to avoid clearance issues? I would hate to order online only to find out the rims won't clear the brakes. Thanks |

Tirerack guarantee 17" fitment on the wheels they show available for a given vehicle, that being said, I went with the OZ Omnia in 18x8 ET45 for my winter wheels (from Tirerack) and fitted a slightly oversized 225/45-18 Sottozero 3 tyre on all 4 corners of our M240i, this gave just a little more ground clearance and less scraping issues on deep ruts than I normally contend with with our normal RWD sporting winter driven cars.

LOL - like the 'crazy-hot matrix' of wheel choices .
Tire Rack can usually tell you specifically if a certain wheel will fit, and I'd suggest considering 17" for winters so you have the added resistance to blowouts. I'm running Sparco pro corsa 17's (made by OZ; 3 NY winters w/o bends or blowouts). |

When I used to let my 2 go out in the snow, I ran 215/50-17 on BBS SR wheels over the blue caliper MSport brakes. No issues. Actually, 205/50-17 are a closer match to the overall OE circumference, but either of those work just fine. No need to go as wide as 225 for a winter tire where narrower is better.
BTW, in Canada, I wouldn't go for the lure of so-called "performance winter" tires. Get studless winter (unless you are only in Toronto city limits where the snow is well plowed). Recommend Michelin XIce xi3 or Blizzak WS80. Those brands. Those models.

17's will definitely fit, but you have to be sure it is a listed fitment. As others have said, Tirerack guarantees their fitment. I've bought two different sets of 17's from them and both work fine. (one for winter, one for track)
BUT, watch the offset value. Stock 7.5" wheels have an 'ET45' offset. You want to stay near that number. Between 40 and 45 is best. Pay attention to that value as you peruse through the wheel options. (The offset value would be different for wider wheels, but you don't want wider for winter.) The offset on my winter wheels is only 32mm, and they 'poke' out a lot more than I would like. Yes, they fit. No rubbing and plenty of brake clearance. But the tire/fender clearance is closer than I would like, and it's offset enough I can feel a difference in the rear suspension tracking. And dang, it's only July. Why are you talking about winter tires!?!? |

Hi guys. New here and I’ve been trying to get info on winter tire setups. I’ve been reading everything I can find and now I’m looking at X-ice i3 runflats in 225/45 17.
I’ve got a local quote for those tires with BBS SR 17x7.5 et35. Are those particular wheels a good fit for the tires? I see several people recommending BBS SR but I’m wondering if those are the right size. Also, is there any slightly more affordable wheels that people would recommend for those tires? If you're looking for a good price on the BBS SR's, I'd recommend you call Elvis at WheelsCo in T.O. Great price and awesome service.

Hi,
I'm UK based and just looking to purchase winter wheels for my M240i, and am getting confused by the whole offset issue - I'm looking to go to 17" for the winter, but what width would I be recommended to get, and what offset? I'm looking to go with the same wheel / tyre on all four corners. Thanks.... |

Narrower wheels/tires are better in the winter for traction. A popular width for winter around here is 7.5" (which also happens to be the width of the stock front wheels). The stock offset is et45. If you want your wheels to be more flush with the fenders, then an offset of et35 would be better. Any offset in between these would be fine. Tire size for a 17x7.5 wheel would be 225/45/17. Make sure to check the 17" wheels you are looking at will clear the brakes, as some do not. Tire Rack is a great resource as their fitments are guaranteed. If it's available on Tire Rack, it'll fit.

Hey guys,
Sorry to hijack this thread but it's the same topic. I'm picking up my 2017 240i x-drive tomorrow and need to buy winter wheels. I'm looking at these specs: Rims: 17"x8, 5x120, ET35, CB72.6 Tires: Toyo Observe G3-Ice, 225/45R17 Will these fit properly? Will they poke out of the fenders? TIA |

They will poke out slightly, ET45 on an 8” wide wheel is ideal with a 225/45-17 tyre. If you haven’t already done so, you should confirm those 17” wheels clear the brakes on the M240i, as some 17” wheels don’t.

Hey guys, new to the forum. I just changed out my stock 225/245 staggered setup for 205/50 17 winter wheels. Many of you seem to be running this setup. Although haven't tried it in deep snow, my first impressions are that the M240's torque really overwhelms the rear tire. It makes for a very fun drive at low speed corners, even with the x-drive, but I wouldn't want that at highway speeds. Have any of you had the same experience? I'm thinking at least 215's for the next set. Thoughts?

@Kokino As mentioned, I'm on 225s and I'd say that although BMW certify down to 205, it's a lot to ask of the tyre to handle the engine's power on any less than 225, especially in the wet and cold. FYI the Pirelli Winter Sottozero S3 does seem very good at resistance to aquaplaning, compared to other winters I've had, albeit it's not as good in warmer conditions. (*Currently quoted £440 per set of 4 wheels, excl.VAT on Wolfrace Website https://www.wolfrace.co.uk/7.5x17-al...r-alloy-wheels with plenty of other designs to choose from. Bear in mind once you add VAT, TPMS sensors, possibly lighter-coloured bolts to match the wheel finish, then tyres etc. the bill will be a lot more.)

The conclusive answer seems to be *some* 17" wheel setups will work on m240i, but unfortunately not all. The issue is the clearance on M-brake calipers.
I was lucky my old set of 17" oem winters rims from my F30 3er fit. OEM 17" Star spoke style 394 with 225/50/17 front and rear ET37 Bridgestone WS80. (these came off of a F30 non-M-Sport brakes). These were common rims on 320i/328i's I ended up putting 225/45/17 rubber on my m240i rwd still lots of brake clearance |
