M240i Dealership Oil Change

Hi, all. I had my first warranty service (aka oil change) performed on my 2020 M240i and they used 0w20 oil in spite of my requesting 0w30.

After following up with my service advisor via email, I was told the following:
I talked to the warranty administrator and per BMW we are only able to put 0w20 in your car with the maintenance plan on your car.

Is that typical for the B58?

When the Longlife-14 FE+ spec oil that is 0w20 was not generally available BMW also specified Longlife-01 FE spec oil that is 0w30, since they have changed to Longlife-17 FE+ as the recommended oil for all the current "B" series engines and it has become generally available, they will only use 0w20 for service, as that is the oil that was designed for the engine.

Your owners manual should give the correct spec oil (top up will allow 1 litre of other grades of synthetic to be added that are 0w20 to 5w40 if they meet Longlife-01 or API SL or better specs).

I also asked for 0W30 but got 0W20.

The dealer is changing the oil at no charge to you, so why should you have any say at all in what oil they use? If you want another type of oil, pay for the oil change. Of course, they might use that as an excuse to void the warranty, so I would just grin and bear it.
I am also wondering why you think you know better than the manufacturer.

You start venturing outside what is recommended and you risk a voided warranty. After 4 years or 50K miles it doesn't make a difference.

I changed the oil myself with BMW TwinPower
Turbo Gasoline 0W30 at 1500 miles.
Now it’s back to 0W20 after the first free
dealer oil change (at one year since only
5000 miles were driven).

BMW NA is having dealers put 0W20 in "B" engines for economy reasons only. My understanding is that "B" engines in cars in Europe get 0W30 oil. I'm switching to Redline 0W30 at my next oil change as my car is now out the free service period. BTW, even the Redline website recommends that 0W20 be used in the "B" engines.

As a new M240 owner I looked in the manual and other than the Longlife-14 FE spec it lists 0W20 AND 0W30. It is not the viscosity of the oil that was designed for the engine it is the viscosity of oil the engine was design for. I suspect the 0W30 is used for higher temperature (ambient) operation but no such chart was in the manual.

I expected to see a chart like the one in my BMW motorcycle. (circa 2008)

FWIW, the BMW race shop I used to install my car's mods told me that BMW's 0W-20 oil was fine for track use, including on hot summer days. I was very surprised by that suggestion. This is a shop with a long history running BMWs, including the current crop of S-engined M-cars.

Before buying the M240i, my previous ownership of BMW high-performance engines was confined to the Motorsports-built S38B35 and S50B32, from the 1980s and 1990s, respectively. Those engines used relatively high viscosity oils (e.g., 15W-50 Redline in the S50). My 5-Series cars have had conventional, moderate-output engines; I don't recall what they used.

The B58B30 is the first non-S BMW engine I've owned that produces high output numbers, and I expected the shop to tell me to run a higher viscosity race oil on the track. Against their advice, I chose to run Motul 5W-40 during track season, likely lowering the car's top speed by a fraction of an MPH.

Like everyone, I've been aware for some time that manufacturers have been reducing their recommended oil viscosities in an effort to improve their vehicles' fuel economy. I just never expected to hear that a low viscosity one-size-fits-all oil was a reality.

I really don't know why people continue to believe that heavier weights are somehow better than the factory recommended specs???

Engine tolerances are way different today from 20 years ago.

Exactly! Those of us that are way over the hill remember when you ran 90 wt in the car as it got closer to 80,000 miles because most engines did not last near that long. But with the clearances now in modern engines you need the thinner oils to produce the required cushion in the bearing journals.

Any one know what the clearance is for rod and main bearings in the B58? I would be curious to see how they compare to my K1200LT which runs 10W 50 and are 0.030 to 0.066 mm and 0.020 to 0.056 mm respectively.

B58 is 0.025-0.070mm radial play on the big end bearings and 0.020-0.046mm on the main bearings, although the bearing surface area is more than double that of a K1200LT.

Use the oil BMW recommends. Especially during the warranty period.

If one has a preference for a specific oil brand, there should be no problem providing it to the dealer for the oil change and maintaining warranty as long as it meets the BMW Longlife-17 FE+ spec. It will just mean that you will need to pay for that oil, as I expect the dealer won't give a refund for the oil used in the free service during warranty.

Some oils that meet the Longlife-17 FE+ spec:

BMW LL-17FE Twin Power Turbo 0w20
Castrol Edge 0w20 Longlife-17 FE+
Motul TOP TEK 6600 0w20
Motul 8100 Eco-Clean 0w20
Valvoline SynPower MST C5 0w20
Fuchs Titan GT1 FLEX 5 0w20
