E46 M3 no doubt is the all time classic.
On the other hand, these new cars have their own appeals~

Yes, real M235i caught a few months ago.

So following the trend, the new 1-series will look similar but with 4 doors ... Hmmm

To me, BMW should have done it the other way, 1,3, etc be coupes and 2,4, etc sedans, but may be it is just me!
Then their numbering system would mirror Audi's and that won't fly.

Lets continue the discussion here:

Back on topic: If the Z4 continues to be available with the N54 engine, easily tunable up to 390hp, and continues to be lighter than both the M235i convertible, M2 convertible and M4 convertible, then why do we need to wait and upgrade to 4 seats? The Z4 is available (also second-hand) today. Just saying haha...

Because coupes have structural rigidity and aren't banned from track events?

Further, the E89 35is is only 89 pounds lighter than the E88 135is, so there's a good chance that the F23 will be lighter than the E89.

This is what I know:

335is (N54)
135is (N55)
Z4 35is (N54)
The N54 is the earlier more expensive and better tuner motor. This is why enthusiasts everywhere praise it. While many mills are underrated the N54 is prob the most so in recent history. I expect the M4 mill to be pure pleasure as well and underrated as well.

Question for Jason

Jason based on what we are seeing with the m235i coupe (if indeed we get the limited slip), do you see this move as BMW's way of saying we will NOT get an M2?

M235i will not come with LSD standard.

I dunno. The CLA starts at sub 30k. If BMW is going to compete in this space, 42-43k starting will be unacceptable. Even if it has a pseudo-M badge.
My brother is a Merc Technician and by all reports the CLA45 AMG is no joke. It also appears to be had for 50ish. I agree we need something pretty special to compete without M4 money price tag. A proper 2 series could give us that (yes the roof is 2 inches too high but will be still sporty looking in m trim).
My bro wants to convert me....while my IS is not perfect the n54 mill is near perfect and I want to look forward to a new BMW in 2016....unless I have GT3 money lol

M2 will come eventually.

My opinion, we're looking around 5 years, but we'll have to wait and see

My point was why get any of the new or upcoming smaller CONVERTIBLES when you can get a very tunable N54 convertible which weighs less right now.

Of course if you want a coupe for its structural rigidity etc, don't get a convertible/Z4.

Also remember that the current N54 Z4 is available with both MT (35i) and DCT (35i+35is). If you compare against a 135is convertible with the same transmission, for instance the DCT, the difference is not 89lbs but around 155lbs / 70kg.

Remember that the new 4-series convertible is only up to 44 lbs / 20 kg lighter than E93 3 Series. The M4 is 176lbs / 80 kilograms lighter than the previous M3, and the upcoming M235i and M2 convertibles aren't likely to push this significantly further.

Anyway, it is BMWs own fault that the N54 is so easily tunable and still available, albeit within a niche market segment.

Agree, but aren't the S55 turbos smaller than the N54 turbos? Don't we expect it to be relatively less tunable/underrated, ie similar to the N55 engine?

The N55 engine uses a single twin scroll turbocharger and the S55 engine uses twin mono scroll turbochargers (same as N54), but we don't know the size of the turbos.

Also, length/width/height of 135is indeed belongs to 1M not 135is, 1M is slightly longer (2 cm.), slightly taller (around 1 cm.) and considerably larger than other 1 coupes, wheelbase is identical.

Lastly, 435i dimensions do not match inches vs mm, they seem to repeat 135is in mm. while in inches they are pretty different, my guess inch is correct, mm is wrong.
That is not correct. BMWUSA advertise the US spec 6mt 0-60 as 4.8, the SMG as 5.0, and the vert at 5.4.

From a brochure I got when ordering the car from the dealer in 2005:

And I've measured my car down to 4.2 per vbox. Car and driver got 4.6 out of their bone stock 6mt coupe test car.

I am not very familiar with US specs cars' performance data in older BMW models; so it was the 6mt which was 0-60 at 4.8 secs then. Thanks for correcting.
