I'm in complete support of sports cars without moonroofs. I ordered my M235 with the moonroof delete. I do question the weight though. Last week I watched a YT video of a guy remove the moonroof and assembly from his 135i and replace it with a CF insert. The entire moonroof and assembly weighed around 35lbs. The 2 series moonroof isn't any bigger than the one on the 135 and I would venture to guess it's the same system/size.

If you want the lightest US spec "stock" I6 turbo 2 series, having a 6MT without the moonroof is it. It's around 90lbs lighter than a comparably equipped RWD 8AT. It's even lighter an a 6MT no moonroof M2.

Hmmm, interesting. That wouldn't be too good then.

I forget where I got the 80# number from -- I think one of the "lightweight M2" builds floating around. Wonder if that included removing the headliner too -- these large panels are non-trivial (the trunk side liner in my 2er was 15#).

Anyway, I'll have a more exact number for our cars soon. Still waiting on a roof to arrive from Taiwan, but might as well do prep work in advance -- remove the headliner, cassette, etc.

32lbs for the 135i moonroof assembly.

Pulled the headliner today. Together with the light panels / sunroof switch, sunvisors and the A-pillar covers, it was a whopping 10 lbs. Which is to say, not a lot.

It all adds up; take what you can get and keep on going.

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out for you.

IIRC, when you spec out the cost per pound for weight savings on high end racing parts, it is often more than $100/pound, so losing 10 pounds easily isn't bad. The factories have made a fetish out of finding lightweight materials, so it is getting harder to just rip out a bunch of crap and take a whole lot of weight off. Also, many of the carbon fiber trim pieces actually weigh more than their plain-jane factory counterparts.

As usual with this car, things ... escalated.

My little "let's plug the sunroof over the weekend" project turned into:

- no one makes a sunroof delete, might as well do a full CF roof, wait 3 months to get it from Taiwan
- well, I'm pulling the headliner to make space, might as well get rid of the rest of the interior, and drill out the curtain aribags while I'm at it
- great, so much space, now the rollbar is miles away from all the panels, let's update it too...

And while you are at it, why not reinforce all the body welds.....

To circle back on my little "plug the sunroof" project, which went out of control. The weight we ended up with eventually is 3574 lbs, full tank and 150-lb driver. That will be ~3324 empty, no driver.

Unfortunately, too many changes since the last time I put the car on scales to get accurate numbers for everything. That time was 3714, but since then I've added much bigger wheels and tires, bigger brakes, fender flares, so maybe a total of 60-70 lbs.

So, roughly speaking, 200 lbs saved from:
- interior plastic: rear panel covers, A/B/C pillar covers, trunk liner, all seatbelts (~40)
- front wheel well bracing (~30)
- rear bulkhead, curtain airbags (??)
- headliner, comfort lights, SOS switch, etc (~10)
- sunroof cassette, replace metal roof with CF (??)
- passenger seat (~15), my sim rig borrowed it at the start of covid
- different rollbar (probably about the same?)
- different shocks & springs (also same?)

So, depending on what the error bars on all the unknowns are, probably between 50-80 lbs for the sunroof + CF.

I'll stop for now and just trash the car around the track for a while. If I get back to cutting weight, there's another 100 or so "easy" pounds in AC, speakers, lightweight battery.

Did you remove your carpets? IIRC, someone on the forum credited them with weighing ~50+ pounds. That hardly seems possible, but maybe they're 50+ pounds of sound deadening.

No, the main carpet is still there. 50 sounds like a lot for that, but who knows...
