Trade my 2017 F22 M240i for a 2008 E92 M3?
Hi...so a few months ago i got a 3500km 2017 M240i. I love it, and have never driven anything like it before. I really love it...except it is an automatic. Even though the ZF is the only automatic that has made me smile...still. You know what i mean.
Also worth noting is that the 240 is not my daily driver...a bicycle is. For roughly the same price I paid for the 2-series, I found this 2008 Coupé M3 with barely 20.000km on it. https://articulo.tucarro.com.co/MCO-...-4000cc-v8-_JM Off course that means I will loose all the nice electronics, screen, etc. and also the turbos. Those beautiful turbos. What are your thoughts? Should I just try to sell mine and go for the M3? |

I wouldn’t. I know what you mean about the transmission thing, but man, a ten year old M car is going to cost so much more in maintenance and gas. You can cheaply and easily make the M240i substantially faster, but it will NEVER sound as good as the e9x, nor will it rev to the stars. And damn, I thought the 2 Series had a drab interior, but that M3 is worse. I’m sure the M3 is much more exciting and rewarding at the limit.

I'm not sure of the cost in the US but here in Canada the engine replacement is over $20K and the actuators are $4-5K I owned the 09 model for 4 years and have a 240i and agree, the M3 is an absolute blast with the 3 pedals despite being slower than the 240 but that M3 could deplete the finances in a heartbeat. Hope this helps |

OP, that being said, they are ticking time bombs and if you dont do preventative maintenance on the rod bearings and the throttle Actuators, you will be looking at a very expensive repair bill. Look to spend 3000-5000 just on preventative stuff if your seriously considering one or get extended powertrain warranty. You will miss the 240’s power and torque though just so you know. The m3 isnt a slouch but youll defs miss the torque of the 240. |

Looks like a stripper. They are a blast! The steering, chassis, throttle response and glorious sounds of the S65 are so rewarding. Only 295 lb ft of torque so if you enjoy driving like you stole it, bueno! Overall they're a reliable M car but have some known issues. If anything breaks, it can be expensive to fix. I wouldn't buy it without knowing the history and driving it.

Like most things, it sounds romantic but not realistic.
As others have stated, those M3's are time bombs. Other than the mentioned throttle actuators and rod bearings you are looking at a 10 year old car. Things like shocks are going to need replacing, and on a M3 with active dampeners you are looking at big $$$. |

I test drove both a 2012 M3 and the m240i in looking for a replacement for my 2016 Cayman S
the NA v8 sounds great, but really is torqueless, made my cayman feel torquey (which it is not) the car also felt old...cars age and you can feel it in the end I chose a brand new m240i... |

You'll spend a fortune replacing the rod bearings and throttle actuators on the M3, they all need it and then there's the "M" mark up on parts and service. Plus you live in Columbia. Are there really that many qualified M mechanics in that area? I'd really should look into that.

I would not get a model-year 2008 M3 - too many headaches on that early version of the V8 M3, including the aforementioned rod-bearing and throttle-actuator issues. If you were to find a 2012 or 2013 E92 M3, that'd be an entirely different situation. One thing you'll have to adjust to is the lack of the 240i's low-end torque on the v8 M3 - all the power in the S65 V8 is delivered above 5000 RPM, as with most racing-oriented engines.

WOW! Thanks everyone for your answers, was away yesterday as it was world cup day here. (We won!)
I had never thought the problems with the earlier S65 were so evident and "unavoidable". It makes a very good point in favor of the 240s reliability and cost of ownership. I think I'm keeping the M240...hoping they keep producing the manual and saving for a while until I can make the "upgrade". And the growl...isn't that what the speakers are for? |

Actually I traded an m3 E92 2011 DCT with a hartge exhaust and no cats for a m240. I miss that sound, the downshifts were near exotic sound.
You have to take into account elevation, the s65 sounds beautiful but at 5000ft+ turbo is the best way to go. If you don´t care for absolute power then it is way above in performance in comparison with the m240 at the limit. |

All in all, my main reason for thinking about the change was the transmission...but seeing all the counter-arguments, it looks like it would not be a good decision financially nor from a driving-fun sans stick point of view. |
