The 100,000 miles Club

I will be hitting 100k miles this year with my 2015 M235 xDrive. So here is a place for you road warriors to share your 2 Series mileage.

I did pay a price for the mileage, like:

- all "lifelong" fluids changed at 60k (next at 120k)
- new ZF AT (at 60k, BMW paid 80%)
- new water pump / thermostat at 77k
- new coolant ext. hose (77k)
- various leaking seals fixed around 65k

Still loving my DD M235!

I'm at about 104,000 miles in my 2017. Like you, I changed all the lifetime fluids changed at 60k and plan to do so again at 120k. Unlike you however I have not had any other major issues with the car (other than windshields; I've had two cracks in the exact same way while using defrost).

I'm 60% of the way there!

What happened to your transmission that required it to be replaced? Also, was some/all the coolant system replacements preventative or did they fail?

I'm at 14.5K here and hoping to add another 5K+ this year if a long road trip makes sense.

Good questions.

1) AT - diagnosed as "porous case leaking fluid"; was discovered upon fluid change at 60k; Out of warranty, but BMW offered to pay 80%; dealer install would otherwise cost $10k

2) proactive replacement on water pump / thermostat; on my previous 335 they failed at 60k; I waited until 77k. I drive a lot long distance in remote areas. Did not want to take a risk getting stranded.

3) Ext hose broke when touched while doing 2)

Only at 45k on my 2016 228i. Have had no major issues at all. We're only putting on about 9k miles a year right now so 100k is a long way off. (It's because my wife works at home that the annual mileage is so low.) Still love our 2 though.

I'm approaching 105k, but I haven't had water pump or thermostat issue yet. I plan to replace them later this year (currently looking at the Mishimoto water pump to see if that's any better than the Pierberg one from FCP euro). Rear diff bushing is cracked, so I need to do that soon (have the purple powerflex one ready to go). I had to do front thrust arm bushing just over a month ago too. Wheel was also cracked, which started causing a slow air leak in my tire, so I just upgraded my wheels with OZ ultraleggera's.

My first thought when I hear "porous" when talking about a cast metal part is porosity...which should never have made it out of the factory.

The part was defective to begin with, which is why BMW paid 80% of the cost of replacement.

Agree. Before I could even open my mouth BMW offered a replacement.

Just crested 76k miles on my M235i. love it. No issues. Will worry about waterpump and coolant hose when it starts to give me issues. (I'm a mechanic, if it aint broke I dont fix it).

Do want to do the trans flush soon because I do know how finicky ZF's can be. Other than that, I plan on doing the VSRF charge pipe and CTS intake pretty soon.

So, I did not quite hit 100k by the end of the year. Now at 95k miles. No further issues and car continues going strong. I decided to drive it until it falls apart.

Just hit 20,000 miles on my 2015. It’s an extra car for me…my “toy”. At this rate, I’ll never see 100k miles.

Don't flush but have a fluid exchange performed. What's the difference? A flush can mean that a cleaning additive is added to the transmission before draining and refilling. An exchange is just that: the ATF is exchanged with new ATF via the ATF cooler hoses.

I caved and after 8 years and 100k miles I put in an order for a 2024 M240 xDrive.
Should arrive in September. I struggled with this for a while as I truly enjoy the M235. But is was time for an upgrade.

Congrats! Report back with a comparison
