Might be worth joining your local BMW CCA - around here they are a great source of this kind of info, plus discounts from many parts vendors and repair shops. If you want to, you can use my # and we'll both get entered in a drawing for stuff (#540002; assuming this is a nationwide promo).

To me it's a bargain, but everybody has their own sensibilities. I'm tracking some, so between the discounts and the tech inspections it is a no-brainer, but there are also pretty substantial parts and repair discounts, and a solid recommend that steers me away from the bad-repair-nightmare would be worth $50 to me.
