Built like a tank!

Embarrassing, but I must share:

Over the weekend, I was driving in DC and ran over the very end of a median curb (I think?) while making a left turn at an intersection. In my defense, that intersection is poorly lit and whatever the object was, it was separated from the main body, so I really did not see it and still can't be 100% sure it was a curb... Also, my left front tire was off by 0.36 psi as I was making the turn.

I must have been going about 25-35 mph when the car collided with the curb and the left side was violently thrashed up and down. I'm still shaken by the incident.

As I got out of the car, I feared the worst. But miraculously... not a single scratch anywhere. I checked the entire left side and even under it. Leaves me absolutely dumbfounded.

But the really amazing part... Nothing mechanically seems to be astray. No rattling, car feels the same, steering feels fine. I've been testing straight line on the road and there isn't any perceived misalignment / veering. And this is after 2 other major pothole occurrences.

I'm going to take the car to my BMW indie shop in a few weeks and have them do a thorough structural check and alignment test just to be sure... but for now, knock on wood! This car is very solid

I totally agree. I was rearended by an SUV on the freeway at about 40 mph. The bumper sustained minimal damage and I was fine. Yet another reason to love this car.

I see what you did there with the tire psi.

Good one

I had a very similar incident in my M235i recently. Had been driving for many hours when something inside my head started saying " stop for the night in a motel, you will get up early in the morning and finish you trip safely". So I pulled up to what was looking like a decent place, registered with the concierge, and hopped into the car to put it right near my room window. But I must have been really tired, and the sudden release in focus on fast driving made me not cautious enough - I collided with a really high curb with my right rear tire. Like OP, I got out expecting the worst - but... apart from the darker area on the rubber that got in touch with the curb, nothing happened. The next day I hit the motorway and to my amazement the car was and still is riding as new.

But "built like a tank" is not my conclusion; we both were close to disaster, and bot was lucky - that's it..

True. Luck played a big part in it, but I think there is some merit to how sturdy the chassis and suspension is!

You are very lucky...I ran over some poorly maintained railroad tracks and popped 2 tires bent 1 rim and scuffed another doing 15mph. If it wasn't for google nav telling me to get into the right hand lane I would of been fine. :-( Now every once in awhile I hear a weird sounds almost as if my windshield has become separated and shifts a little from time to time.

You need to delete that nav thing. Next time you may not be so lucky. Use brain instead.

Wouldn't of helped me...it was pitch black and I had 0 clue of where I was (hence the nav) and the right that I needed to take was 50-100 feet past the railroad tracks

Had you said your right front tire pressure was off by 0.36psi I'd say you've got solid justification. Might even call it a heroic save only running the curb. But left front on a left hand turn? C'mon man, that's just making up excuses.
