Well it's installed! It was more of a pain than expected, two Canadian winters had the downpipe and midpipe hopelessly stuck. Ended up having to remove the entire exhaust with the downpipe still attached to get them separated. At that point a sledge and a block of wood make quick work of it.
First the bad news - the cold start is extremely loud. Just as bad as I expected from what I'd read beforehand. If I were to start it up late at night or early in the morning I'd be throwing it into gear immediately to cut the volume down. The rest is all good news though. Once the cold start is done (about 20 seconds) it becomes much quieter and even more so a bit later. Idle isn't much different than before. Driving in comfort is marginally louder, but completely reasonable. Marginally increased volume at cruising speeds. It didn't drone at all before and I don't think it is now. Even throwing the transmission into S isn't obnoxious since there are no aggressive burbles. Sport mode though - that's when things become kind of crazy. The burbles from letting off the throttle are now cracks. Sounds great under load and WOT, it's loud but I'd say the perfect volume level. Letting off the gas at 4k RPM reliably produces one big bang which is plenty of fun. Upshifts are very aggressive. Tl;DR - Cold start is terrible, everything else is great. |

Having had it installed for a couple weeks now I think I can live with the cold start. If I'm trying to be quiet I'll just throw it into drive, or apply a bit of throttle which makes it even quieter until the cold start window has passed. |

Welp. Thought that opening this thread would give me a better idea of what to expect but doesn't seem like there's many running this configuration. Just ordered the AA catted downpipe and will update when it arrives and I get it installed!

Thought I'd post a small update here. After a couple months I've decided that I can't live with the cold start. I noticed I was beginning to dread firing up the car both on my driveway and when I was out and about, it just sounded too terrible.
I considered going back to the stock down pipe or buying the resonated mid pipe but went the other way instead - swapped the JB4 out for BM3. No more cold start and I'm so much happier, should have just gone this way on day 1. Only reason I didn't was warranty but I've come to the conclusion that if something catastrophic happens BMW will certainly know the JB4 was installed, so why not go the (in my opinion) better route and flash? |

Also sorry to hear you couldn't live with the cold start. It is pretty loud with the non resonated midpipe but imo sounds rly good and I haven't gotten any complaints from my older neighbors and I live in the suburbs lol. I will admit there is sometimes some vibrating at certain rpms but It's not annoying enough for me to call it drone and the way it sounds all other times makes up for it. Is it safe to turn off cold start on a catted downpipe? Isn't the cold start needed to warm the cat?

Maybe your catted downpipe muffles the cold start just enough to make it livable which is good to know. I'm very happy with the sound and volume level any other time but the cold start, it's more than quiet enough when cruising and roars when you go WOT. I agree there is some drone when under light load like going up an incline on the highway but it's not enough to bother me (and I am picky). I'm no expert by any means but my understanding is that the cold start heats the cat for emissions only as the cat is not effective until it reaches operating temp, so I can't see why turning it off would hurt anything. |
