I think its a big deal anywhere. People say there is no more discrimination, no racism, but its not true. Society will always judge a person based on how he/she looks.

Big thumbs up for people like Matt, people who value diversity

i guess we live in two different worlds. i've lived in various parts of the US and having friends of a different race is normal. at least for people of my generation.

Saying that you have a group of "diverse" friends is a racial adjective, although in this case not negative.

Why not just say, here is my group of friends? Mentioning that they are diverse is reinforcing their differences when I assume what you are trying to do is show assimilation. The two just seem at odds.

IMO, I think you guys are looking way too far into this. I think him saying he has a diverse group of friends he means he has friends who are all different and cool in their own way. I don't think he means racially different, just personality-wise, characteristically (I don't know if that's a word, but it is now), and background-wise different. From different walks of life...

oh yeah, totally agree, I was just agreeing with the point, and that point alone, that having a group of diverse friends is normal

Agreed. Someone who was oblivious to "race" or "colorblind" as we all learned in elementary school would say "Here is a picture of my friends". Why is their race significant to the picture? It didn't even stand out to me as being that diverse, just a group of kids. But now that it is mentioned, it's what i see.

this kinda stuff counter-intuitively perpetuates racial issues.

You guys are reading into it incorrectly. They are diverse in ALL ways, not just skin color.

Josh49 got it dead on.

I'm not referring to "hey, look at the rainbow in MY picture! yay!".

This is supposed to be a positive thread about me being thankful for having great friends, and I felt the need to share.
