5w-30 < i think this is the right one?
5w-40

So which one is it!!!!??

2015 BMW X1 sDrive 2.0

just bought the car and its 10k over its oil change......lol but has 33k miles so the engine seems to be healthy

You probably want an LL04 or LL01 oil. I would use this in an N20:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pennzoil-...of-6/761949808

Actually in an N20 I would probably run BMW TPT 0W-30 LL01FE.

It all really doesn’t matter as long as the oil carries LL01/LL01FE/LL04

0-30, 5-30, 10-30 and non LL all would be fine. The most important thing is to change your oil on a regular basis

Suggest you record the old oil draining (or glopping out, as the case may be). Could become a useful learning tool...

change it every 5k miles, easy to track on the odometer, too.

Also, for colder days to come, use thinner oil (5w-20). During hot summer season, use thicker oil (5w-30). But if your motor is nearly new, I'd stick to thinner oil since BMW's newer engines are toleranced very tight on those bearing gaps.

Do you mean 0W30 vs 5W30 for winter? Changing operating viscosity based on ambient makes no sense

I'm cheap lol don't wanna spend 49$ on just oil
would this work
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Quaker-St...5?athbdg=L1600
its 5W-40 but is BMW LL01

Also i live in California our weather is quite stable no such thing as winter so the W is useless to me just want to know if i should do 5w 30 OR 40-weight oil
Seems like everyone said 30 is that what BMW puts?

if 30 is highly recommended
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Castrol-E...5?athbdg=L1600
this is BMW LL01 and 5w-30 full synthetic 28$

Yes, both of those are ok. The QS is I think relabeled Pennzoil Platinum Euro so it should be good. You *may* get lower intake valve deposits with the L stuff but who knows.

As to 40 vs 30, the viscosity doesn't really matter as long as it meets BMW LL-xx specs. The 40 will be a little thicker, but it's not detrimental unless you care about 0.1 MPG.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend swapping oils just because of seasonal change. Unless we are talking about -40c winters OK maybe you need a special winter oil but in 2023, the oil viscosity recommended in your manual is OK for winter to and a winter VS summer oil is not required.

Yeah I don't care about .1 mpg lol! but ill just get the 30 since temps are fairly cool its spring and not summer i assume thiner for cooler weather and thicker for hot

It's more about how you drive your car and what your oil temps reach. If you hammer the car all the time the 40 is probably better, but yeah probably no real difference if you're not tracking the car.

I'm not an expert on those but I did a quick search on RealOEM and it seems like you have a plastic oil pan, so the plug is plastic.

I believe this is the part number:

Do you have a plastic plug? i ordered oil filter but it doesn't come with a replacement so I'm re using it unless BMW has some werido design where it doesn't seal after being removed

If you're chenging oil at 10k you've already lost and oil type won't matter much! 5-6k max, filter at every oil change. Don't skimp!

My motto has always been, oil is cheap , engines are expensive. I have always changed oil on a shorter interval than suggested by a manufacturer.

The Manufacturer of your transmission (ZF) recommends service every 50k miles. (Dump & Fill oil change + new pan/filter). I'd recommend replacing the mechtronic sleeve while you're in there as preventative maintenance.

Well then you're dams sure not going to be happy when you see the price of LifeGuard transmission oil...lol...$49 would get you about 2 liters. Liqui Moly is a popular substitute. Personally, I'd stick with LG.

I'm changing my oil viscosity because during my forged build, I observed how close the BMW's bearing gaps are set. They are really tight. And when I look deeper into the tribology of those journal bearings for both the crank and rod, it's my understanding to take on a more minute approach to manage the film that's going to be in between the rotating surfaces. But you're more than correct; all factory recommended oil will be enough no matter the season unless we're dealing frequently between sub-zero and half-way boiling ambient temps. And 5w-20 vs 5w-30 or even 5w-40 won't even differ that much to matter unless you really want to fine-tune a target. 0w's are fine, too for they are near low-vis to allow a better start-up lube-in. No matter which ambient temp setting we're in, the engine's temp management system will dial it to what's needed to operate. I'm out here in Houston, TX. Ain't nothing comparing to folks in Canada when it comes to cold weather.
