M235i clicking/ticking noise at idle

Hey Everyone,

I’m a new m235i owner with a ‘14 6spd. I notice a clicking/ticking sound at idle when the car is in neutral. I don’t hear it cycling through gears (at least not over the engine) and when I’m idling in neutral, it goes away as soon as I press in the clutch. Reading through the forum has me believing/hoping it’s just the fuel injectors, but I wanted to get your opinions given the observation with the clutch. Thanks!

Sounds normal, my ‘15 6-spd has the ticking noise at idle.

valves, injectors. every bmw makes it after a while.

can try to change your sensors.. Not guaranteeing it will solve it, but it made my idle much quieter and car liked it.

My clutch chatters at stoplights, once you put the pedal in it stops.

Is this the same ticking issue with the hva? If so that's pretty disappointing. Had a n52 with this issue before and it annoyed me to no end. Why hasn't BMW sort this out?

From what I understand, the "ticking" is the direct injectors. Apparently, they all do it. Mine certainly does.

Direct injectors are very loud. Have you ever heard an older diesel truck, basically the same technology. Though if you do hear one that is louder than the others you might want to look into getting that one changed.

If it goes away when you press the clutch, it's probably just the release bearing. Pretty common among German cars and the Sachs/Bosch clutches they use.

The release bearing typically doesn't last as long as the clutch itself, and from experience I can say it's the primary reason enthusiasts change their clutches prematurely. I get it, though, the labour is the same, so why not do it all at the same time... But a clutch assembly (less bearing) should last about 2-300k kms, in theory. The bearing is simply designed to fail, and the clutch is designed to wear..

Dang I'm glad I saw this thread... mine started doing this about a month ago. I only hear it at idle and only sometimes. Usually when I'm in a closed space like parked between 2 cars or my garage. I thought it was the elite tune v2 since I had been testing it for Dinan for about a week when I first noticed it. But I installed the bypass, and it was still there. Walked all around the car with it running, and it's definitely coming from the engine but I couldn't tell where from. I feel a little better about it with so many people saying it's normal
