Eldor Coils - Anyone?

Any M235i owners using the Eldor Coils?

In early 2016, Eldor also became an OEM to BMW. The newly improved BMW coil part number - 12138657273 which is manufactured by Eldor, supersedes both the Delphi 12138616153 and Bosch 12138647689. Similar to the Delphi, it has a outer metal body but in black. The eldor coils has a snugger fit on the spark plugs and are heavier than the Bosch or the Delphi. These eldor coils are also used in some of Roll Royce's car such as the Wraith.

What this also means is that these ignition coils are interchangeable. So if you're currently using Delphi 12138616153, you may switch to Eldor 12138657273. However, it is recommended for all of your coils to be of the same part number/brand at any one time and not to use a combination as there are minor differences in each new part number/brand and to consult a professional before interchanging them.

Stick with Delphi, on another forum nexyus who is making a retrofit kit for the b58 coils (even better than precision racewerks coils in terms of making even more power output with a longer spark duration while heating up the igbts less) showed that the delphis perform only a tiny bit better than the eldors. So it's a pointless nod switching to eldors from Delphi.

Intersting

You are the 1st source I have seen that state Delphi being slightly better than Eldor.

The Eldor B58 coil is a different animal.

.
I have never had an issue with my Delphi Coils on the N55 & only consider the Eldor as the preferred coil because it looks like if I were to order OEM coils from BMW -- they would have the Eldor name on them.

So when replacing old coils -- and the price being similar Delphi vs Eldor --- I believe I am going to select the Eldor

Was your original post a request for our experience or a rhetorical question? In any case, I am glad you made up your mind.

*I made a mistake at a lower dwell the eldors are a tiny bit better than the delphis.*

At the low end of the dwell setting the eldors make marginally more power than the Delphi, but the difference is so small it's basically nothing. Then at the upper end at 3.0 Ms dwell the delphis weren't tested while the eldors were but the power output matched the delphis at a lower dwell of 2.7 Ms.

So eldors aren't at all worth the "upgrade" if you already have the delphis.

Eldor Coils & BOSCH Plugs

It even seems strange to title this post . Eldor Coils + Bosch Plugs
.
.
Most seem to go the route of NGK Plugs.
.
The OEM Bosch Plugs have been working fine on my Stage 1 for some time now.
.
Nearing 70K Miles -- I wanted to change the Coils for no other reason than to Refresh everything at what I consider half vehicle life -- think 140 thousand miles is my target.
.
The Eldor Coils were almost identical in price as the Delphi's they replaced so it was a no brainer. This combo from FCP is a good choice for those looking to change for maintenance & reliability. Not so much for performance. The M235i plugs are already 1 Step Colder than other N55 platforms.

Cheers

I see on eBay Eldor with 12138616153 part number listed as compatible with my 2015 M235i. Contrary to Eldor 12138657273; lists as not compatible. Which one should I get? Which one is better?

IMO don't buy anything from EBAY that is critical to the engine's health, because the chance of a fake is way too high. Buy it from a reputable dealer like FCP euro.
