This makes sense for Europe, Asia, and Australia. Not so much for the US but why is the interior nicer than a 3 series?

Oh my god... Big fan of the recent designs (except the i3 and the two GTs) but this is just ugly as hell...! Looks like a Merc B class competitor though.

this will be a high selling car in Europe and potentially North America (US & Canada)...mark my words...
Oh I have no doubt it will sell well--this will bring out the lesser wealthy soccer moms and badge whores.

Remember when Top Gear had a "plate of sick" and a BMW badge in it? some shit sells no matter what...I just have to believe that the move away from core values will catch up with them at some point. With record sales, it isn't now obviously...we shall see...

E.g I don't get why the 335i gets twin exhaust while more powerful 335d gets the dual left handed pipes... Unless there's another model in the pipeline.

IMHO something changed between the concept and the production 2AT that shifted it from elegant to a little 'meh' with stretched back eyelids. Just hope the regular 2 stays RWD.

Well the more they sell the more profit the more the chance of a halo car - it's a bit of a logical fallacy but I hope that's the case.
I like the joke, just wish it didn't apply to a Bimmer.

Same thing with the tailpipes and the 135 versus 335 - never made any sense to me there either...

Ultimate Driving Machine my a$$.....

WTF, Fugly, . Looks like BMW raided the leftover parts bins and leftover warehouse material and put together this monstrosity. How is this a 2series? How this made it out to production instead of a 2GC is ridiculous.

Agreed!
BMW first attempt on making a small car that's offers lot's of space.
Kinda building upon the 3 and 5 GT.
This is actually a nice effort, will do great in EU as a second car.
Direct competitior to the B series from MB.
I liker this, and the engines, I3 is promising.

What people don't understand is that because Porsche made the cayenne they can now invest more money into making better, faster, more reliable 911's. The same is true here... while many would argue BMW doesn't need more money, having more will enable them to make more interesting halo cars. So instead of having just the M3 and M5, we're able to get an M1, M3, M5, M6 and maybe who knows one day an M7. I think this ''touring'' car will be very successful, and honestly I like it more than all the crap ugly GT 3ers and GT 5ers they're bringing out, those in my opinion, are useless cars. Honestly I think adding this car to their lineup makes more sense than most of the variants they brought out recently. I would remove the GT's all together in the lineup before I dismiss this car. The mercedes B has been very popular in canada, and i expect this one to do even better. Europe will buy it like crazy.
A much better Cayenne analogy would be the X5. The suggestion that BMW can make more interesting cars would carry more weight if BMW was actually making more interesting cars instead of heavier ones. They appear to be focused on building less interesting cars. This "Active Tourer" is merely the latest indication that BMW has lost its way.

that interior is better than the B-class…an improvement amongst it's peers.

The power trains are still untested, but given what we saw with the 2.0T from the 328i, the 3 cylinder will also be very competitive amongst it's peers

the chassis is shared with the Mini Countryman, which is a very solid platform for a small FWD ute. Again, one of the better handling ones. Owned a Mini Cooper for 5 years, VERY good car!

quality I would think would be equal or better than the VW Tiguan which is a similar size.

For what the Active Tourer is used for and the market it's going after, this is a very competitive premium version. There was mention of a 6MT (probably for Europe), but I'm not complaining about that. I'd definitely drive this over a VW Tiguan, Mazda 5 or a MB B-class (which I owned before - B200T)

Heritage, tradition, BMW's old school values (i6, RWD), mean nothing. If I need a car for a young family, you're not buying a M235i, you'll be looking at X1, X3, 2 AT, 3 touring and maybe X5. All depends on your budgets and your needs.

I doubt we will see this in the US. In the US a BMW family car would be an X3 or an X5 (I have an X5 for transporting my family). Something the size of a B class Mercedes is far to small. If I did want a small wagon, BMW already sells the X1 and the 328 wagon.

I have decide not to replace my E70 X5 right now but if I did, I would probably opt for a Toureg. Much more fun than the new X5 and cheaper than the Porsche.

The only flaw in that concept is the X1 and X3 have far less cargo utility than a AT, and an X5 is going to be way more expensive. I use my car for work so I'm extremely sensitive to cargo hauling, and the X1 and X3 are far worse in regard to floor space than even the 335i I just ordered.

Even further dilution of the brand. It would be one thing if they had kept the rest of their lineup more pure and enthusiast-oriented, but they haven't. They've been cutting corners and been in full-on mass market appeal mode in order to save money where ever possible and maximize sales.

Too bad.

I guess if you were in charge you'd stop all that "saving money and maximizing sales" nonsense ASAP?

You want to haul cargo and you bought a 3 series sedan? Why not the wagon?
I am also surprised that you think the 3 series sedan is a better cargo hauler than an X3. You have a point with the X1 but with the seats down, it could work. They are all too small for me though.

So, BMW makes a "minivan" and calls it an "Active Tourer", ha.
And because they have an "M Sport" package, the question everybody is thinking, but doesn't want to ask is, "Will there be a M2 Active Tourer version?"
Hahahahahaha, think about it, if there were one, it would be M Division's first FWD M model. Nothing is sacred anymore!
