With so little details yet to be released, how do you quantify this statement?

But the 1M is not a traditional M car. It is a parts bin car with a tuned version of non-M engine. Doesn't mean it is a bad car, far from it actually. |

lol. are you serious? it's based off the underpinnings of the M135i...which is ALSO NOT an M car by any means. By history, you can learn that no M535 or M135 is a real M-car...it's just an M-inspired car built on the same lines as every standard model. it is neither built or developed by the M-division.

well the 1M is an M car, as it was developed BY the M division and built by the M division. That's enough as far as i'm concerned.

The 1M is as much an M...as this car. lol Your logic is so flawed. If the "division" that built the car is all your concerned with...you shouldn't be here commenting. |

Unless you are a BMW engineer directly involved in the 2 project or working in the skunk works these statements are speculation. Sure dimensions are similar, but chassis design could be totally different and likely will see upgraded components. More to the point, All M cars start as BMW models first, with improved components, brakes, shocks, light weight materials, higher output motors etc. They are not a design onto themselves, but rather an evolutionary improvement of the base series, meant primarily for track. There is no way for you to know..."it doesn't have the development nor the uniqueness to be one" without knowing the details of the components that total the sum of the car.

Replying to earlier posts, I really couldn't care less personally whether it's an "M" an "is" or anything else. It's more of a marketing/brand related continuation of what was established in the market and emphasizing the Motorsport brand. In terms of business strategy it makes little sense as it devalues what an "M" is to those "pure M" buyers. Along with the 4-series name, the decisions just don't make that much sense to me.
It's like Honda making an R-Accord that's slightly warmed over. When you have something that means something to the market it's an unwise business decision in the long run due to a loss in that core brand equity... Worst of all it may do little more than cannibalize M2 sales, rather than add to 235i sales. Again, I couldn't care less and am very interested in checking this car out (assuming they finally get the steering to not feel like a video game), it's an analysis of BMW's market strategy. Perhaps there's a reason BMW didn't propagate the designation as used in the M535i way back when they made the E28.

it's pretty funny watching people like Pazzo argue this may be an M-car. How delusional.... |

M cars have LSDs from the factory, wider fenders, and better suspension/tuning than their counterparts. Also their interiors are better materials. It's not just the engine and BTW this car should have more HP ala the 1M if it was an M engine. The M performance M235i is no full ///M car. I think the Audi RS vs S comparison is completely accurate. This is BMW's S car. |

Having said that, it's also likely to be the most collectible recent M car, whether it's as qualified as some of those produced in larger numbers or not. |

I hope there will be factory options to get it a bit closer to a real M as the mentioned LSD but also stiffer and lower springs, beefier roll bars and larger wheels. High quality leather and audio would also be welcome. The 1M is not only a real M it has many parts from the M3 which could be seen as reaching above it's class. |
