I have been told by a dealer principal fresh back from Germany that they detuned the M2 so as to keep it below performance levels of its larger brethren. But it could be easily tweaked were his words.

I never said they were similar / the same engine.

Was just a little confused that's all. A few people have suggested it's a detuned s55, hence why I thought that's what you meant

No doubt the "special" N55 in the M2 is not tuned to its maximum potential. I mean, even the standard N55 can be reliably operated in a higher state of tune. And S55 has plenty of potential left as well for future iterations. So really, M3 is also "detuned".

Maximum potential is a largely loose term. What does this mean? There are so many variables:

Maximum for how long?
What temperature ambient conditions?
What fuel?
Under what engine utilization characteristics?

I have a M2 ordered, standard with 6MT. Still thinking if I'd like a DCT as its a NCO.

Congrats! Get the manual! It will be a unique car in that segment ... all others are not available in a manual. Although I would go for the Pure version if you're going for the manual. Personally, I don't think the extra features in themselves, particularly without the DCT, are worth the extra $10K approx. but each to their own of course

Yep still thinking about the spec, Pure misses out on:
Comfort access - no big deal, but would like to have this time around.
Electric seats - don't care (prefer manual, lighter and I rarely adjust my seats)
Heated seats - don't care (prefer manual, lighter and I rarely adjust my seats)
Adaptive headlights - don't care
High beam assist - don't care
HK Audio - Want this - but might go aftermarket plug and play option if I pick this spec (like a Focal kit).
Alarm - I'll option this in
DCT - prefer the manual

Sounds like boils down to Comfort Access, which is not possible to retrofit (at least not easily/cheaply).

Aftermarket sound system > 2 series HK anyways.

$9k will get you a lot of aftermarket kit (*cough* Akra)... is the Comfort Access worth that much?

That is my issue. My car will be used as a run about and all my daily drivers have had comfort access for at least the last 5 years. I'm so used to it that it'll be like going back to using keys to unlock cars for someone used to using the remote.

M2 group buy

Anyone have information on group buys for the M2? and anyone would be interested in this if it means reduced pricing?

Anyone here thought about buying the RS3? ... rather than waiting 6 months for the M2? I drove one the other day, definitely handled well, braked well, sounded great for a 2.5L engine! ... throttle response not as sharp as I would have thought - perhaps that's the turbo lag - but didn't wow me like when I drove the M235 some time ago. I'm only hoping the M2 will be that much better than the M235 ... can't wait for some journo reviews

IF they were the Sedan... They would definitely do so well, But Sportback/Wagon whats with that they already have so many :/ Rs4 & Rs6 it's sad really

I would honestly pick a Rs3 Sedan over M2 and i own a 2er.

Test drove the RS3 about 6 weeks ago... Let's see how should I put it... It's a great bit of kit... BUT Cost vs performance is not good enough... S3 at 70kish RS3 at 115k even with a 10k discount at 105k? It's not 35k better than the S3 and I'm afraid it's definitely not a 100k+ car!

But I don't think the M2 is worth $115k either (definitely not $30k+ better than m235i)... So yea I think these cars are a bit overpriced at full retail...

Ye basically sunroof, alarm, paint and windscreen top tint are the only options on both the pure and the m2. The m2 comes with more standard gear such as hk sound, comfort access, alarm, adaptive lights but not any extra options.

Nice, do you know when you get delivery? I still don't have any exact confirmations.
